After biting the bullet on the curl grub issue i removed the layer to re-pot , blessed i did as it contained quite a few small larvae/grubs , the roots looked healthy enough to expect this to surviveThe larger long white roots are from the layers and the finer roots are from the smaller fused plants .With the layer safely potted up , i removed the inarch grafts that were attached from tree to tree to seperate the original trunks in the pots .The inarch graft have also fused remarkable well . Tomorrow i will severe the inarch grafts and set more layers at various points up each trunk and another series of inarch grafts as well .Cheers Alpineart

This is hopefully the last time these will be inarch grafted .I have set another 30 + grafts on both upper and lower sections of these trunks .Then without hesitation i set some air layers to produce the roots required to severe the trunks in half for the purpose of having some rather aged trunks for further development .Yes they are very straight but i will place some movement in them after they are separated in about 18 months time . This will depend on were the branches are placed , only 2 casualties occured when i dis-lodged 2 grafts during the process .Because they were severed from the main branch i am quite sure they wont survive .

I have used the original layers as inarching material plus a few i purchased from Shibui Nursery Yackandanda .Only 12 of the original branches on all 4 trees were kept in their original placement and 6 of those are being used as sacrafice branches where the air layers are set . You could say i have actually built these trees from scratch simply by inarch grafting . These have gone from my Flower pot pines "AlPinus Constructus" " to the Awesome Foursome "AlPinus Constructus Completus" . Definately Made and Owned . Cheers Alpineart

Well i bit the bullet and done the deed on the Layered trunks . With a failure on 1 trunk ,i decided to severe the layers and hope for the best . I will treat the 2 suspect layers as yamadori Nigra's and hope for some universal intervention .They have calloused so there's alway hope .These have been a real challenge as layering pines is and was new to me .From 4 x $10 rejects some 3 meters high i have produced a few worthy trunks to play with . Not all beer and skittles along the way but with 45 successful inarches and 12 layers under my belt i think the outcome is a huge success. These are the trainers for the future .

The parent trunks with the kids attached These will stay in place for the duration of this season . A family snap shot of the 4 trunks and the 11 layers including the originals inarched back onto the trunks .\ .Bending 40-50mm trunks wont be a walk in the park but no doubt i will manage a twist or two, maybe even another layer may come of the main trunks . The success of the challenge, these are some of the layers,the 2 suspect layers are in the front left , they have lagged behind the others as far as candles go . I have 5 other layers from the original process somewhere , however they are now mixed with a batch of current trainers i purchased from Shibui Nursery 2 years ago. Hope you enjoyed this journey , i'm happy with the destination .

Hi chiah , Jackie is one of a kind that's for sure . She has all the plants just inside the boundery and they sell from there . Over time i have purchase about 4 ute loads, of tree's from her . Due for another visit as soon as i recover .

B-U-M-P Update please.

Hi Velvetsicklid , mate they are cruising along . Not much to show at this point , i have lost 2 of the original trunk bases but i have 16 plus layers taken off . I plan to set a raft layer on 1 of the 2 original trunks when i finish with the 6 Cedrus Deodara i'm currently working on . The original apex layered off has died back to 1 main trunk due to this accident so it will become a Litersti or Bunjin , still on crutches so its a bit hard to round them all up for a pics . As for those suspect layers well bugger me they made thus far so i would assume they can and do survive as over large calloused cuttings with no roots , however i wouldn't bet my lefty on it . I will get some pics up ASAP .

Well i hooked into this layered section this morning .Iwas planning to layer the lower branch off as a raft but changed my mind All the branches are inarch grafts and are they shockers so i thought i would butcher the trunk to get some movement into it .The grafts can stay in place but i'm not worried about damaging the bark during the torture treatment . I removed the lower horizontal graft and it will become a second trunk if it survives the mis-treatment. Again rough and ready no time to waste so i clamped the base together with some timber and anchored that to the pot after some 10mm x3mm alluminium flat strapped to the trunk . A few big heave hoes with a clamp and it done , toss on a couple of wires and its ready for a re-pot.
