Hi Bretts those root have to go and the bottom folige pads are too heavy since the storm the growth has been lower down rather than than the apex . At a guess i would say the callousing took the nutrients from the top to heal the breaks .If i was to sacrifice the 2 bottom branches as small jins it would improve dramaticaly or i could sacrafice the top and use the the lower branch as a canopy . But i like it the way it was so i must rewire and style very soon .Cheers

I was thinking the two legs where actually roots themselves hence exposed root form. I would be very happy if you kept us upto date with this one it will be intresting to see how it comes out. I like the idea of keeping it all. At least for now anyway.

The 2 legs / roots were the originals , but 4x4's have run over it and uncovered and unearthed the trunk and base roots which are now dead . The 2 remaining roots then sent out the feeders and created a tiny rootball .You probable couldn't do something like this to a Nigra and expect it to survive so it has taken a beating over a long period to allow the feeder rootball to form some 500mm from the trunk .Its 1metre high as it stands , 600mm from the base of the trunk to the tip . I could twist the 2 roots together however it would result in a more pronounced reverse taper so i will spread them about 50-70 mm and it should improve the look asthetically but will it be a Bonsai style or will it be just another one of my trees in pots ?

all good mate, and as for the comp i think the rules you found are good for new stock, as forthe older stock i think we use it as an excersize, unless you want to do it in two part comp, best transformation of a styled tree to literati?
i think we will have to start a couple of new thread, one for the new stock comp, one for the restyling comp, and this for the discussion of literati in it all ?

and i think the phempis is nice too, as for the roots i think they work for the over all design of the composition. it is literati and i think they need a more rugged look with the roots to balance the tree

I didn't read the rules they used I was too busy looking at the trees Lets do a pol and see how many are intrested in a comp. I would say there would not be many refined trees that would enter but it would be good to allow the option .
I am unsure about the root base I would love to see a good virt to compare?
I think Robert Stevens in the last article gives the best explanation on Literati.

I haven't looked at all the links yet, cause it's bed time, but I'm DEFINITELY in for a literati comp. I've never tried it before, but it's always intrigued me, I really like them!

The one constant of Bunjingi ( Literati ) is it is Bunjingi no bunjingi cascade or exposed root or windswept. Bunjingi IS the STYLE.
Some will perceive the difference's however. So with that in mind how do you propose to Judge them?.

So when you style Bunjingi you have some restraints. So we have another discussion point.

Ps I prefer to use the term Bunjingi. It is merely a personal choice. As I am not a man of letter's

PPs I have just found the Magazine International Bonsai 1997/NO.1 published by William N. Valavanis.
Almost the entire Magazine is devoted to the disscussion and devolopement of the style.

Another Magazine to cover the subject is Bonsai & Stone Appreciation Magazine. The official Magzaine of Bonsai Clubs International
Volume 46, Number 1, both have very interesting subject matter also.
