Not bad Mason. I am thinking that as most of us know the difference between pre-bonsai and refined bonsai from our specialist nurseries that we should not exclude pre-bonsai material from the new styling section as part of this is about discovering how we can create Good literati from whatever source necessary.
I would be expecting extensive notes on where the material was sourced but hoping for few limits. Maybe we need to keep the nursery names silent until the end though to assist in anominity?

Yer. I agree. We just shouldn't be able to buy a finished bonsai from a nursery. All good!

it all looks pretty good to me brett, now all we have to do is get it organised and settle on things. one thing i was thinking maybe we have a spend limit to be on even playing fields? this would allow everyone to be able to get roughly the same sort of stock, i know some nurseries are cheaper than others and more advanced trees are more costly, but i dont think it is even if one person can only afford say a $30 tree with potential then another person could afford a $300 tree with a heap of potential. i just like to keeep things even and fair and i think this would help alot ?

One other criteria for the eligibility opf trees re the pre styled material is to have a requirement to include photographs of the original material before any work has been done.
This will preclude anyone from cheating by acquiring advanced trained stock

spot on ken, i think we all would like an even playing field yea? i hope so anyways. i think progression shots will be a good thing to as this will be handy not for the comp as such but for the discussion involved in it aswell

This is shaping up to be awesome ^_^
I don't have anything pre styled in Literati style, it would a progression thing for me. I can see a few rough things in my head, would just need to find some suitable stock!! going to the nursery next weekend, so I'm sure I'll find something untrained that work with my thoughts ^_^

Bugger you Mojo, Larch is great. Ray won't sell me one because he reckons my climate will kill it. I have 3 year old seedlings that I germinated that are still alive but they are growing slow in our heat. Told ray this but he still won't sell me one reckons give it time they will die
Still we struggle with anonymity oh well at least we try

10) All the photographs must be taken by You - no one else. You can certainly ask for tips and advice on how to take pictures, but your fingers are the ones clicking the camera. No Photoshopping allowed.
11) This tree must be your OWN tree, and not someone else's. Those caught using a tree that does not belong to them will be disqualified.
The above suggestion would definately rule out any ready made literati/bunjin by the entrants. Is this deliberate? Also I would again suggest that size is indicated.

i think we are thinking a second category for already styled literati mate
as for the size thing, i agree some what but this is bonsai isnt it? where size doesnt matter

Of course there are no size restrictions in bonsai but I feel that the judge/judges would need to have a yardstick.

i guess knowing whether on not is is of shohin size or smaller or larger can be important as to show detailed work on the tree.

I agree that those rules should rule out any bought bonsai. Because I agree with Jamie, we shouldn't be allowed to go out and spend $300 on stock when others can only spend $100. Can't wait 'til this is ready Brett!

I also can't wait for this to up and running. This is probably my favorite style and am keen to have a go with the big boys and girls.
