A great progression for what will be a stunning tree. I dont think the pot is up to the task of complimenting the tree and are you contemplating a change :?: I know pots are a personal thing but a plain one would do it more justice. A Shimpaku, yes.

Graeme wrote:Wow, as I was panning down over those pic's I came to one and instantly thought, "What a great front that is". Looking down I noticed the pic was actually the back of the tree. Naturally the tail would have to be bent toward the "front", but I really like the look of the apex from that side. Doable or is the trunk to far forward?
Graeme,

Yes it is too far forward ( I have looked at that option and is out side my skill level) and with a angle change the new front will be closer to the pot.
Bretts wrote:Thanks Peter, I noticed after your comment that the branch I was talking about come much further forward than I first thought. That is confirmed more by the new pics.

My first thought was to bend the branch back as in where marked in red so it became a back branch heading back towards the base of the tree so as well as giving depth it would give stout to the image(foliage closer to trunk). But this does seem a bit impossible considering the angle and size of the branch. So I am thinking where this branch is marked in green or even the next branch along. It would take a bit more time to fill out this area and it would also necessitate a flattening of some of the other branches I think.

Brett ,

With angle change I will have to rearrange the foliage and branches

Bodhi,

Its not a shimpaku. Similar to chineses "blue star" and yes I will be looking for a suitable pot when I am happy with the design.

Thank you everyone for your inputs it has given me more to think about.

Peter

Thank you Peter, this thread shows a great progression for this tree. Like others I was briefly shocked by the hard decision to prune the top branch, but it does work. You have done a lot of work in a short time. Kudos. Cheers Shane

Update.

I have re-potted,changed the angle down and toward viewer. This has bought the foliage closer to the trunk. Now I will wait for the foliage to grow out to refine the branch placing.

Peter

Great progression Peter. It's inspiring to see this tree as it is now let alone imagine what it will become. Thanks.
