that different angle looks interesting grant

in the apex section at least any ways, whats the rest of the trunk like?
i think that could make your new front anyways mate

if the trunk is as interesting as the apex section

The Jack pine responds very well to torture (ie heavy compression wiring and bending) so keep an open mind !

Well one night turned into 8 nights. Its been a bit busy in Canberra lately for some reason.
Anyhow back to the workshop.

Same side tilted more.JPG
Same side again but rotated forward to accentuate slight movement.JPG
I haven't had time yet to work on the tree but I hope to next Sunday at a workshop. I will do sketches and this way we will have a record of the tree no matter which way we go.

I went to a workshop today and after some consideration I came to a decision about the future of this tree.
I selected my front and took off a branch that was now unnecessary.
Cut off before needle pluck.JPG
I ended up using the original front and here is the sketch.
I spent a while needle plucking to make the wiring easier when I get to it.
I need now to bend the apex above the possible cut off point. This is only a relatively minor bend needed. This will emphasize the interesting curve left after a previous cut off.

After looking at all the possibilities I decided to go with the original front. I wanted to use the full height and nice taper of the tree, and accentuate the interesting curve near the top left after a previous cut off and reduction.
I tried a different front and then tilting it to the right a little and then a lot but it just didn't look right.

I will now bend the apex section including the existing interesting bend at the top. I will then decide which apex to keep.
I haven't needle plucked all the way to the apex as a lot of it will be removed once I crank it down and then look at the angles produced.
The lower branches of course are to be bent down at very sharp angles as well.
This won't happen today but will later in the week.

Hi Grant,
For some reason I did not follow what you where up to here and finally read from the start. I was starting to get concerned because I saw a very nice tree in the original front and did not like the idea of cutting it back compressing it or slanting it.
I think there is a VERY nice tree in their. I don't see it as boring. I love the motion of the trunk. I am looking forward to the wired pics.

Ready for wiring and bending a little.JPG
Some wire added and a little bending..JPG
Ready for more wire and less foliage.JPG
Wire applied, some thinning and a way to go yet.JPG
More when done.
