Hi Regan
I'm with Jamie chop it low to a nice fine branch. If you select a thicker on you will get a bump where you wire it up that will take years to grow out. Pick a fine one and it will come straight up no dramas, no bump. then grow the hell out of it and it will thicken in no time.
