Enjoying the collection so far..
Here are a couple of my 'will be/in development' shohin bonsai -

Ficus rubignosa (25cm) It's a fraction taller at the moment, needs a clean up and ramification starting this year.

Banksia integrifolia (25cm) Just potted last month, needs some thickening but I'm happy with it in general at the moment.

Casuarina sp. (27cm - does that mean it is Kifu?) Just had a trim, still a long way to go but it's thickening nice and quick.

I have a little concern with your banksia though, it is showing some obvious reverse taper at the base just above the roots, have you thought about creating a new root system above this to fix the prob? i cant see it being to hard, toothpick method would be perfect for it, if you did the tooth pick method you wouldnt have to worry to much as the roots would end up covering over it all

Can you run me through the toothpick method Jamie? Is that scraping/cutting the trunk in little sections and flaring out with toothpicks to promote basal thickening? I know the inverse taper is frowned upon in bonsai circles, I was hoping to cover that bit with some landscape material - e.g. - a ground fern/moss or some rockery, sometime in the future.

Strawbs, did you defoliate that fig recently or is it an old picture?

hi mate, it will be easier to show you these are a progression set of pics from Gerard but the actual theory and practice of it I am pretty sure Bodhi come up with (no offence to gerard who has done a great job with this one too!).

it is a good, gentle way of creating a new nebari without putting the stress of the ring bark on a full air layer
