Hey all,
I dropped by this morning and picked up a couple a young buxus and a shohin sized pinus sylvestri. Fantastic quality of stock and at absolutely ridiculous prices!!
Can't wait till the show in April. Great work guys!!

since i coudlnt make it and pretty pi#$ed about it , can some members show what bargians they got just to rub salt into the wound.

For a first time event this went pretty well I think. It was interesting from my perspective to see what sold and what didn't move. Most of what I sold was well established native trees. I took in a lot of trees which I have spent a few years setting up for growing on, the roots have been sorted and they have well placed sacrifice branches but this stock didn't move. The trees I saw walking out the door were mainly established trees with a clear outline of structure. One smart grower from the north west club bought some of my trident cuttings which are taken from a really good selected form with small leaves and very short internodes. Would be very interested to hear feed back from other people so we can build this event.

Congratulations YVBS on great first time event ... it struck me as a very friendly community based event, with everyone keen to have a chat. Morrison's appears to be an excellent venue that I'm sure could support any potential growth next year. All the vendors had good rage and quality stock from starter to advanced with some absolute bargins (I would have picked up more but my tiny courtyard is currently filled to capacity - might have to get a table next year myself ). Although I haven't posted much on here (promise I'll post more ), (I've read a lot from other members and in fact only through this site knew about this and other events). And so, among others, it was great to meet fellow Ausbonsai members Craig and Jarrod and put a face to the profile (so to speak) .
I went in there in the hope of getting something unique, hopefully native, and so Craig your selection didn't disappoint, I was one of those who bought a bit more established Leptospermum Petersonii - (Lemon-scented Tea Tree), an awesome little tree with heaps of potential and such a unique fragrance from the oil in the leaves.
Jarrod, hope you cleared you table - if not i'm sure someone will get a bargin very soon!
So thanks everyone envolved (YVBS) hope it was worth it for you, I know come along next year, and to everyone else reading this (member or non-member) it is up to us, the enthusiasts, to support these type of events, both for the viability of the clubs envolved and for Australian Bonsai as a whole, therefore I'll always try to support and spread the word about events and exhibits, including this wonderful forum/website, and will always be more than happy to pay an entry fee in the knowledge that I'll surely be repaid with a smile, friendly advise, and a visual feast of ideas and bargains!
Craig, as asked for our ... probably the only thing that might improve the event could be a demo table, it provides interest, and keeps people hanging about (hopefully with the potential of buying more as they get more ideas) - I realise this requires capacity, but I can see the potential in coming years
Seeing the community atmosphere, it has also encouraged me to find out more about my local bonsai club/society - is anyone a member at Waverley?

Hi all
I would just like to thank everyone who DID NOT go to this sale, you made it very easy for the people who did go pick up a bargain. Also would like to thank everyone involved in organising the day, hopefully it will be an annual event. I know i will be back next year.
I would have loved to browse longer but my son was being himself( ie 2 and a half years old) so had to have eyes on the back of my head while trying to check out what was on offer.
I picked up this Cedar for $220. It is about 30 years old and is in a pot from Tokoname. I wish i could have had a chat to the previous owner but like i said before, i had to watch my boy. Does anyone know what type of cedar it is? If the previous owner reads this( or anyone who knows this tree) please give me some background info on the tree, like, how long did you have it for? On the print out paper you had 1985, was that they year you bought the pot or is that how long you have had the tree?
Anyone who has kids and would like to attend this next year, i would sell the idea to the other half by “ going to the healesville sanctuary too” , my boys had a blast of a day.

Oh yes, critique welcome for the tree, only had it a few days so will not be upset if you are ruthless( but constructive). My first thought would be to make the left had side branch smaller or get rid of it. What do you think?

Hello Busta, I looked at that cedar on the day and my first thought was to remove that large branch completely, but first you should wire the whole tree from top to bottom and get the foliage pads re-defined. With cedar it is possible to really step the branching and create very well defined structure. While you are wiring it you should strip off all the needles hanging under the branches which will also help to define the structure of the tree. Once you have done all that then take a second look at the branch on the left and see how it fits in. I think it is a green atlas cedar but I could be wrong.

I agree, wire it and give it a general clean up then assess the bottom branch.

I feel the apex may be pointing the wrong way, but after you complete the above work post it back up for us to have another look at, remember to take lots of photos.

The pot looks nice too, could you take a pic of the chop on the bottom of it? Looks like Yamaaki?

I think I like the first branch but the apex conflicts with it. If the current apex is removed and the upper part of the tree moved to the left the flow of the tree changes completely.

Wow, so many replies so quickly, thanks guys! Will try give it a wire this week and take it into the next club meeting. Photos never do a tree justice imo. I will be sure to post picture of it up on the site before i do anything too drastic to it.

I like a few others missed this event, but I think I have the most plausible excuse, its a bloody long way to drive just for a couple of hours. Plus the fact I would not then be allowed to bring it in to the State.

Looking at what was bought I must admit too some envy , I would encourage any one who is within coooeee!! to get there next year.

I would also look at doing something with that left branch. It has been suggested that you remove it. Before you do that do as Craig has said wire it, then shape it and see what needs to be kept, and what has to go.

Sorry Pup, I think I beat you,

After so much time spent planning and promoting this event along with my fellow YVBS members, I had to miss the day by flying to Sweden for work.
I can't tell you how much it hurt, because I knew the quality of the material being offered by some excellent growers.

I am however pleased that it went well and everyone seemed to enjoy the day.

I will would like to join Jarrod by saying a big thank you to the AusBonsai community for supporting our clubs first sale day.
WE will keep you posted on up and coming events......

By the way the YVBS bonsai show is coming up in April, come on down and say hi !
