New to maples need advice

Well i don't have either of those things on hand and its only a small crack (2/3 of cambian layer still intact) so would there be any harm in just leaving it with the wire to support it? Or does it need to be completely air and water tight for it to heal?

Just leave it and it should heal quite well as it is. Wounds heal quicker if they are sealed to stop the regenerating cambium drying out but trees recover from far worse damage in storms, animals browsing, etc without any help from us. At worst some new shoots will come from the trunk and you can grow a new leader.
