Thanks Paul both will be oval using your suggested method. I am planing on putting the base on from the top though so the crack effect is not spoilt.
A test piece has been made from this clay I forgot to check if it went in the last bisque firing I think it must of because we are always looking for small pieces to fill the gaps. I believe it must have gone in without any fan fare because we forgot. We know kilns I will check on Tuesday and make sure we remember to put it somewhere safe in the glaze firing.
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.
Very nice pots. I paticularly like the one you say has been made from clay from your friends farm. Have you finished any of your pots and do you have trees in them? Some photos of the finished product, with or without trees in them would be great to see. I am from a small city and we have next to no pots available to us here and have to get pots freighted to us most of the time. This has forced me to consider adding pottery to my hobby list. What are your thoughts, should I just forget it and put up with whatever I can get or should I give it a go?
Thanks,
Wes.

Thanks Wes,
I have only had a couple of my test crack pots fired so far. You can see them here. viewtopic.php?f=29&t=1483&p=14056&hilit ... pot#p14056
Others in this thread are on the rack ready to go into the kiln when it gets fired up again.
There has been a fair gap between firing at the moment hopefully it gets fired up again soon.
I would recomend learning pottery to any bonsai gardener. It is great to be able to make your own pots. I am very lucky that a group of ladies that have been active together since the 70's are still very active and meet to work together every week. I only stop in to say hello at the moment as my hands are full with kids.
Oh I have a tree in one of these pots now I will take a picture when I get a chance.

I checked out your pots through the link you sent me and I would have to say that I like 2, 3 & 4 but honestly, great job with all these pots. How does it feel to be putting your own tree into your own pot. I would imagine it would be extremely satisfying and exciting to be doing this. Again, once trees are in pots, photos would be great to see. Best of luck with all your pots in the future and if you ever have any you may wish to sell, let me know as I may be interested.
My wife has an aunty in the area here who owns her own pottery gallery which would normally be ideal for someone like me who wants to do this sort of thing. Unfortunately the family doesn't get on terribly well so I don't know if I can get her to show me anything but will persist in annoying my father in law to let me ask her for some lessons. In addition to this I might see if I can find a pottery group here in Rockhampton.
Keep up the great work,
Wes.

To get PK to comment means you are on the right track, eh?
When can I lodge an order, or better still, when are you available for a Commission?
Regards
Gary
Yamadori is purely Bonsai in spades

Thanks Gary,
It has been slow going latley as far as pots go but I have booked the kids into child care for Tuesdays(pottery day) so I might be able to get stuck into it again.
Let me know what you want and I will see what I can do.
