Well I had a VERY good look over my trident today and it looks as tho about half of the leaves have been affected, with the worst of it being about a fifth of the tips being black and dead so I have some hope that it'll pull through. Mostly because the newer leaves that've come thru aren't affected. It had a great day of sun today, I ended up needing to water it three times during the day because it was bone dry right through to the bottom!

Good luck Paul, I hope you're able to ge tto the bottom of the problem and your tree is better soon!
Also Brett I had a look at the suggestions and the only one which looked similar were the "pot worms". The others are definitely different, but thanks for all three because now I know a bit more about different pests! But it also said pot worms don't damage the plant so I don't think it was them, as well the pot worms seemed white compared to mine which were semi translucent.
Anyway i'll keep looking to see if I can find out what they were, thankfully the little trident is not so little this year and doing well, no sign of worms or black leaves so fingers crossed it'll stay like that from now on

Quick question; As far as I can tell my T. Maple hasn't had anymore affected leaves. It's getting more and more buds open and they're all looking really healthy, It's really hard to tell tho. Could I pinch off the black tips of the leaves so that if anymore leaves are affected they'll really show out? Or would that make things worse?

I know what you mean, you could if you must but only if there is plenty of new growth that will keep giving the tree enough energy.
I would avoid cutting the tree back for at least most of this season though, maybe a light trim late Summer if you really have too.
From what I can gather this type of systemic fungus can enter open wounds when it is humid.

I was just planning on trimming off the black part, on most of the leaves it about a mm of the end. It would just make it so much easier to look at it and figure out if it's stopped or continuing.
