Could this be a new era, Mojo posting pictures of trees

Those trees are looking very healthy Mathew

I was hoping this would give an impressive display this year but it looks to be starting to lose it's leaves already. Oh well looks great at the moment anyway

Love this thread of autumn. Maybe someone should start a winter one when we get there too

I love your little Root over rock trident (shohin I think) you have a great eye for creating beautiful trees. If my trees turn out half as good as yours, I will be a very happy man

Been sooo busy at work and not getting home till well into dark quick pic at night of 3 japanese maples in some colour. The one on the right is a dissectum ever red or simular. Spring colour is incredible and its on its own roots too

Not autumn colour. These are the low leaves of a Euc., about to die off. Normal leaves in the background.
And these are younger leaves - red rims, red stems, and all kinds of "fire marks".

Just about at maximum colour here this year so here are some pics.and heres one that I think shows that individual difference can affect autumn colour. This tree consists of 4 seedlings that have grafted together into a single multi trunk tree. They share the same light, moisture, temp but 1 (twin trunk on right) has completely dropped leaves, the back trunk has a crop of brown leaves while the 2 on the left are just getting max colour now.

Lovely stuff Shibui. How large is the Quince A nice touch leaving a fruit on it. I know how large the fruits can get.

That Chinese quince tree is 50 cm tall.
Do you think it would look better with the fruit on the right? I think it looks a bit out of place up the top

I personally think you got it right the first time A little more subtle.

As trees age do they tend to get more colourful? My young trident doesn't come close to the fantastic tones yours has.

I don't think age has much to do with autumn colour.
As has already been stated, the main factors that influence colour are genetics (choose trees for autumn colour in autumn, some individuals have better colour than others), and environmental conditions - cold nights and warm, sunny days give maximum colour.
Here's a photo of the same Japanese maple as above a few years ago when conditions were even better. In Melbourne you tend to have more overcast days and no really cold nights so trees there will rarely display their best autumn colours (unless you resort to the beer fridge as Mojo suggests???)
You could try moving to North East Vic or stay in Melb and just enjoy your trees as they are.

For those who have a bit of time a trip to northeast vic at this time of year is well worthwhile - Bright Autumn Festival, Excellent wineries and restaurants and our great history and scenery.

Neil, I have to say that that is STELLAR autumn colour on that English Elm, I can't remember seeing better. Not a bad display of bark either.
