Webbos: The big pine at the Sunday demo was a white pine grafted onto a black.

026.jpg
I was delighted to be asked to assist Joe in styling this tree to Hiro's design.
Big thanks to Joe who probably does not realize how much I picked up from working with him.
Also big thanks to Marlene for the extra photos.
The demo day was huge, nice spread thanks to S & P, great to chat bonsai with lots of enthusiasts all for only $15. It appears that the demo was thrown in for free. :palm:

Dario: It was great to catch up and see that you have jumped right in :tu: The club will have lots to offer for you but you should anticipate a slight drop in standard. Demonstration trees of this quality do not turn up everyday.

As part of the organising committee it is difficult to know what people want.
Every spot was filled on every day and lots of people got to watch. People learned heaps and socialized well.
Clubs represented:
Bendigo :worship:
Yarra Valley :tu:
(enourmous support from these two clubs.)
Ballarat
Geelong
Northwest
Peninsula
Bairnsdale
Northern Suburbs
Goldfields
I expect there are more but that is off the top of my head without a list of clubs.

Newzealandteatree: I am glad that people so far away took an interest, sadly I expect a few of these trees will not get the care they deserve (I have seen trees come back after 2 years with the same wire and no pruning) but most will be treasured and bring their owners great joy.

Buzza, David & Pup: You can lead a horse to water but................

If anyone has any requests or suggestions which might make future events more attractive please speak up.

One of my favorite transformations (sorry to repeat photos)
044.jpgc.jpg
An ugly and difficult apex was removed from this old thick cedar.
(blue is where it was cut)
The new apex (red) was bent upwards.
This was an option we did not see coming this branch appeared to be far too thick to bring up into the new apex position.
The jin is currently being used as an anchor to tie the apex into position and will be shortened in the future.

A quick update on the red pine, wiring has been completed and branch positioning has been refined.
A new Pat Kennedy pot has been selected as the likely candidate.

I like the 'light' rework, I really think this tree will be a stunner.

The pot is nice for now, but I don't think it is rough enough. I think it would be a perfect candidate for an old Yamaaki nanban?

Sunday July 6 Afternoon is the major demonstration bookings to this stage have been a little slow.
When a booking is made it is numbered, seats are also numbered which means early bookings get the front seats.
From past experience we expect about 80 people will attend this day.

Advance Critique Sessions
Thursday July 3 Afternoon has a few vavancies
Friday July 4 evening has 1 spot left

These sessions are my favourite.

Each participant brings two of their best trees (potted trees not nursery stock) and Hiro will offer suggestions on how to improve them. Very little work is done but the discussions are fantastic. Tree owners will openly discuss problems or what they hope to achieve with their trees and Hiro always has good suggestions.
Great for observers as well as participants.
