Just noticed this now, will try to photograph tomorrow but the foliage is very dense.

Here is an example of the type of branch that ends in a spike. I do not ever completely remove these, once they have stooped growing I may shorten them for direction ,if they are growing in the wrong direction.

I do shorten all strong vegetative growth( the ones that extend really quickly and just keep growing). Leaving them grow for a while I feel is good for the health of the tree overall.

Thanks Grant, Much appreciated. So if I understand this correctly when it sets a terminal spike these branches stop extending for the season, and are later trimmed in Autumn. Are these also more likely to set flowers in this season or the future? Or do they have nothing to do with potential flowers?
