I'm only about half way through the web version of series 1, and absolutely loving it!!
I'll be purchasing it on DVD in the new year, after Christmas is out of the way!
Love your work, Lindsay!! The series is amazing.
I've noticed a famila face or two, and mroe than a few familiar trees from my trip to Omiya!

Yes Nathan, there are quite a few Omiya identities making contributions to the first half of series 1. After the next 5 episodes you may well desire to become a bonsai potter. When I was in Shikoku, Japan in August the bonsai community were astonished that Katsushi Kataoka had revealed his unique bonsai pot making techniques. If you are not interested in bonsai pot making, I suggest that you skip ahead to episode 15. I hope you enjoy. Then series 2 has some awesome stuff that will fast track you into creative acion

Sounds fantastic, Lindsay! I love bonsai pots, but have never made my own. Well not yet anyway. I have had a few sent over from Japan though, and spend just as much time looking at pots as I do trees lol!
I really want to get back to Omiya in the next few years, was certainly one of the highlights of my Japan trip! The festival sounds like an awesome way to spend a couple of days in Japan. After watching the series, I have a few more ideas for bonsai places to visit in Japan as well.
Thanks again for your hardwork mate, we all appreciate it alot more than a few words on an online forum can convey
^_^

Lindsay.

Thanks for the video. I like the new style ficus. The pine tree has a very interesting shape. it does has a x-factor look.

I like the red wood that you collected. The way you work on the deadwood is amazing.
What brand of rotary tool did you use? the drill bits looks powerful.
Give us some tips. hehehe

I use a foredom quarter horsepower unit. I've had it for a decade and have only had to replace the drive shaft once ($55)

The unit can be pushed all day long without fail. I use the gouging bit the most then use custom hand tools and chops for the detailing.

I sought the advice of leading U.S redwood experts about ways of preserving the wood. They generally suggested brand name wood hardeners. These were not available here.
I first dried the carved wood then treated with lime sulphur with light sandings in between coats. I then coated the area with Kendon grafting mastic (wax based).

The grafting mastic has now disappeared and the carved wood is as hard as rock with no signs of decay.

Many of the upcoming WorldOfBonsai creation sequences are around 30 minutes long on the DVD but edited down to about 3 minutes for the online version. With the online sequences I attempt to include the must know info but a fair share of detail is exclusive to the DVD.

I hope that this helps. I know that the Foredom is expensive but a great investment if you're in for the long haul.

Cheers
Lindsay

I need to clarify that the Foredom that I use is 1/3 horsepower not 1/4 as stated in my last post.
