There she blows , and hopefully grows , with plenty of flowers and a few thread grafts along with an inarch graft which was placed after the leaves began to open .It now has foliage in the right places , half the main base has died which makes for a headache as i didn't clean it out prior to this work . Hopefully it wont rot completely and kill the tree.. The 2 smaller layers are now the donors and the largest of the 3 I have left is set for a hair cut after flowering . The cascade failed after Bear had a play with it which wasn't caught in time .

Alpine, do you have any updates on these?

Hi Beano , mate these have suffered die back with only 1 layer surviving and a single shoot on the main trunk . Not a good specimen for bonsai but a good learning curve for the new donated addition , not sure of the name but I will be grafting a few onto other trunks .

Hi Alpineart, after all that its sad to hear they didn't survive. May I ask what you used in the pots when you were layering.
Was it just straight spag moss or spag n soil? Your layering results were impressive.

Hi KIRKY, neither of the above , all my mixes are the same , soft red scoria and pine bark , be it layers , cuttings , trainers or bonsai from junipers to pines , figs , natives and all decidiuos trees I have here are all in the same mix . Open pot layering doesn't always work with this mix , they can be over watered which is the only issue I seem to have , this also includes cuttings struck in the same mix .

These are the only remaining trunks here , some died other were sold . The original trunk has been retained and the base growth wound around the original trunk , very few flowers on it this year The last layer that I kept has a very good flowers , I didn't get around to potting the tree this year however I will slip pot it into a bigger container soon ..
