I have 3 year old seedlings that I germinated that are still alive but they are growing slow in our heat. Told ray this but he still won't sell me one reckons give it time they will die
Brett, Ray is right, it's too hot for Larch in Parkes, your winter temp is the major issue, but you don't really have the rainfall either. I'm surprised he persists with them in Sydney as they need 60-80 days dormancy every year to stay healthy.
jamie111 wrote:yep there goes anonymity  i still think we could run the contest with out to much of a problem even if it wasnt anonymous. and straight up at MM i want a larch too!

Jamie you need to move about 2000km South. Or buy a coolroom.

Cheers MM

Mine looks healthy enough at the moment :P

They usually get a few months dormancy like everything else here. Rain is not an issue we have had running water out here for a while now
As I understand it it is our Summer heat that is the issue and as I stated they do not grow as fast as cooler areas but I am winning so far.

I was told 30 years ago that I would never grow a Japanese Larch in the heat at Penrith, but it's still alive and healthy,
and in the last 2 years since I have moved to a cooler climate it is still going great and the colour is spectacular, in the heat it usually only went brown in Autumn. So it's always worth a try.

thanks for the info jonden.

i would love to have a crack at one but the problem is up here in queensland you can even find one, it was hard enough for me to get a swamp cypress! i got one of them now, its only a starter but its still alive and kicking.

I'm interested.
I'll keep an eye out for the final rules/entry categories.
I have an established plant in mind to enter if there is a suitable category and always appreciate the excuse to acquire new plants to work on.

Nice little finds there AA, but if I understand the proposed rules of the proposed contest, none of these trees would be eligible for entry, as your anonymity has been broken. (You'd have to check with the Rules Committee about this.) That said, I still look forward to your progress with them!

Thanks.

Fly.

Hery AA I still prefer Walters :)
As far as I know we have given up on the anonimity thing but don't hold me to that yet  . Pity you won't be joining us Alpine Literati has the least rules of all.
Looking forward to you joining us Jan.
