Maybe the heart wood is soaking water up the trunk causing this water mark?
That's a possibility I guess Brett.

Mate, keep us updated 'cause you've got me really intrigued now. As I said, Broad Leaf Privet is as tough as old boots - that's why it's now a declared weed. Be hard to kill these things with a 25lb howitzer!

By the way, did you know that you can graft the small leaf privet (Ligustrum Ovalifolia) to the Broad leaf very successfully? Graft first, cut broad leaf branches off when the others have fused.
Since scrubbing the trunk and the trunk looked fine I have watched the water mark and it looks to be nothing more than normal. Still watching though :)
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

I have this too on most of my trees and have also thought it is DL / Neutrog that I now use.

What I have noticed is that it more prevalent on Our non organic substrates, eg Diatomite, Kanuma, as I have rarely seen it on the pots still with Rays mix. ( maybe it is just 'cos it black any way?).
Like yo I just sprinkle DL or Neutrog on the surface of each pot.
Took some photos today to show you.

I always thought it was moss starting to grow that never developed properly and thus went gooey. I have just scraped it off as it will clog up the top of the soil

I notice it is more prevalent on my trees that are shaded or not in full sun thru the day

As too your further posts. I have found this green on akadama Kumra and maybe a couple of other full in organics. Like I siad I would not be worried if the tree was growing fine. The JBP seedling I have noticed this most on, maybe need not be watered so much but as it is powering It hasn't concerned me. Won't need repotting I should put it to the side to dry out for a while and see what happens come spring. I plan on more pine seedlings in Akadama that has given me the best esults with it so far.
That said I would rather it not be there just for the look of it even. I have seen how well spag moss wipes away fungus from anything it touches but then again I maybe have seen it go green on the surface of a pot. But I would try 15% decomposed spag moss(bargian ;) ) and maybe limit the water a little come spring to see if you can get rid of it?
Have you tried growing moss on it. They have said that if moss is happy on a juniper you are watering it too much. maybe diatomite has changed that ;)

Actually I Have just last week put some moss on top Diatomite mix so will see how it goes

Repotted My last Japanes map[le last night that was in Rays mix, and there was green slime on some pats of the surface on it too.

Must definitley be excess moisture as I am still watering every day ( Does not matter as I cannot overwater), but maybe the surface not dryoing out Enough during the day?

I will also pull one of the tree with is on off the bench and hand water sparingly to see if it dries up?
