Slowly slowly.. maybe in another 30yrs they might be getting close. The pruning is not that bad, standing on the trimmings barefoot is :o

Slept most of last week while it rained, all charged up now I can get out & do something with the trees. :tu2:

At the National Collection, we have found that using thick leather gloves and long-handled scissors or secateurs has provide adequate protection from being merciless punctured.

I have a few A. bidwillii myself and have looked at this thread a few times. Interesting to see your progress. Here's one I liked the curve of and wasn't sure whether to chop just above the lower growth or remove it once I have some growth further up as it is on the inside of the curve.

I started removing a few of the internal branches and also in the apex's as they were getting very full. Attached is a pic of one of the branches & what I found most interesting, the variance in size. It gives me hope that in time leaf reduction may be possible.

Dansai,
I look forward to watching your bidwillii develop & mature, you will find they grow very quickly if given plenty of food & water.

Matt

Edit: They really aren't that bad to prune, moving the group is another matter, tallest tree is now 115cm and they are not light.

I decided to dig my small bunya today to make room for more permanent garden residents.

I look forward to seeing how it responds to the treatment, timing & health are both factors that swayed my decidsion. I am hoping to get budding at the cut ends of branches as these will grow horizontal or slightly downward. New shoots from the trunk turn upright close to it & can quickly outgrow this small tree. Height 28cm.

Matt
The trees are coming on well.

Dare I say that they look like A columnaris?

Ok so experimenting with a midwinter prune didnt get growth going earlier like hoped but it did fuel massive amounts of back buds, on the shortened branches & also on the trunk where some of the whorled branches had been removed.
100_5675rz.jpg
Budding in the apex has been strongest (as expected), you can see where shoots have been removed & 2 strong new buds are forming (yellowish colour). The shoot at bottom of the pic has already had the tip pinched out & the new ones at top will be done in another week or so when they have extended a bit more.
100_5679rz.jpg
In this pic you can see the different stages of buds. Those marked in orange are completely new shoots from the trunk & have powered, already having there tips pinched out. The spots marked with blue are where 2 backbuds have already been removed & a 3rd has come up since the last tidy up 3wks ago. The buds marked in yellow at the tips have been present the longest but are slowest moving, a few further back in along the branch can be seen powering out just like those from the trunk.
100_5681rz.jpg
Instead of free reign I intend to keep the tips pinched this season & see how it progresses.
