Hi Antonio, great rootball mate, looks awesome out of the pot .
I can't put my finger on it but something seems out of whack Did you alter you planting angle somewhat or is it that fantastic Peter Krebbs pot that's distracting me , still a beautiful tree though mate

Hi Craig you're right, Something is out of wack, I havent got a round pot and a wedge any more !!! Will need to tweek a little more yet

Looks great Antonio. I'm just a bit curious as to why you photographed the pot from that angle and not front on? I hope that you don't mind me saying that the placement of the tree in the pot does not look right. The tree might have been displayed to more advantage in an equilateral pot (round, pentagonal, or last choice, square) Instead of oval, as then the problem of placement in the pot would not be so much of an issue. It's probably my favourite tree posted lately.

Hey Hack na i dont mind you saying so. i definately need to relook at it in daylight when i have some time. I think more so that when you tilt with a wedge you dont have a pot rim to deal with as there is not much clearance there.

I think it would be improved by taking off the top and right hand deadwood... I think they are heavy and dont flow with the rest of the design.

Its a classic problem isnt it. A great tree with "make you look" features and a stunning pot and the result is that they are competing with each other for your attention. Hard to get it right I think it would help if the tree was back a bit in the pot and angled down a little but i think the way to go is a high backed crescent pot so it balances the dead wood.

All great points gents i will certainly mull them all and see what we get Thanks !!! Again i say the most difficult thing in bonsai Imo is to get the right tree in the right pot in the right spot !!!

I like the tree and i like the pot, but i dont like them together. The old image of this tree would have worked with this pot and all its foliage but now it has been reduced i think you also need to reduce the size of the pot aswell.

I tried a quick (bad) vert withthe pot shrunk down to see how it looked.
Maybe not perfect but i think that the smaller pot works a little better than the current one. Perhaps a different shape? Tapered sides? Its a shame because that pot is really nice! I am sure i coudl find it a home if you no longer needed it

Looks much better in an equilateral pot. Funny how we all see things differently, If it was mine I would tilt it to the right about 30 degrees and remove most, but not all, of the top jin. This would make the left jin the top or apex and the foliage pad would move into a more horizontal plane. An old trick is to hang a white or dark cloth over the section that you are thinking of removing to see what it looks like before actually doing the chop.

Hello Anttal, I have been looking at this tree, it does have a lot going for it, but has as has been pointed out a few problems.

In Bonsai today no 60 pages 41/42, there is an article on a California juniper by Ernie Kuo.

It is very similar note similar to your tree, he has it in a Square pot as suggested by Hackimoto.
It looks very balanced and matches nicely also the colour is a grey.

Hope this helps, I am sure Bonsai North West would have a copy in there library.

I had a little Google search and found this. Is it the one to which you were referring? Note angle of trunk , off to the right and less height in jin and foliage pads in a more horizontal plane.
