Now settle down boys, To get back on track-
That is a spectacular maple Bretts. Quite unusual to see one with such consistent colour all over. Is it anywhere near that colour this year? and is it a Japanese maple or something else?

Thanks Mojo
Neil, I have to say that that is STELLAR autumn colour on that English Elm, I can't remember seeing better. Not a bad display of bark either.
and here was me thinking it was not such a good year. A few years ago it looked like this

Ok, before i put a tree in the fridge is there anything i should be aware of? will the fridge dry the foliage out too much? Keen to get some colour going for the AABC convention.

I haven't seen it this year Shibui. I have checked it out when in the growing season and it looks like a Acer platunum to me but I could be mistaken. The trunk in the pic even looks amazing :hooray:

Hi Jow,
Having not needed to do such a thing I can only talk in theory and conjecture.
My strategy would be to have the tree overnight in the fridge then out in as much sun and warmth as possible each day. The way I understand it, its not just the cold but the combination of cold nights and warm sunny days that makes colour more intense. I doubt an overnight in a fridge in Melb would do any more harm than overnight outside here in the 'big fridge'?? and it doesn't look like much sun in your area this week either but good luck and we will all see the results in a couple of weeks at the convention.

Bretts, the little of the trunk I can see and the general habit looks like palmatum so it probably is, but such intense colour reminds me more of A. rubrum.

Jow im not sure if it has anything to do with trees but when putting bulbs in the fridge ie tulips its highly recommended not to have any fruit particually bananas etc in the same fridge? something about the gases given off causes problems with the bulbs? this all could be talk but thought id let you know and it maybe unrelated to trees etc.
