For a start I wish to compliment the Illawarra Bonsai Society for organising this fabulous event, which went off like clockwork and was a big success. Marc Noelanders was booked 3 years ago, and I heard that he might be booked again in the foreseeable future. His work was complemented by ourTony Bebb, so all in all the Illawarra guys did indeed produce a unique bonsai convention. Special thanks to Brenda en Chris for their kind welcome, and to Brenda specospecially for her help!!
I missed Tony's demo, because we only arrived on Sat. night, but at least I saw some of your workshop activities.
I have tried to remember the many pieces of advice that Marc gave us, but only came up with these:
-- Beginnhers should learn the basics on good nursery material, with plenty of branching and a good root system, not on yamadori, where nture has already done most of the styling and where the branching and the roots are often insufficient; a yamadori often needs years of cultivation until it is ready for bonsai.... IF you manage to keep it alive.
-- It takes a long time to learn the basics properly. Too many beginners think too soon that they know it all. I say, "Come and sit by me and watch me work, and you will see how much there is to learn". The same goes for carving. People think that when they have watched halr of carving, that they've seen it all and know it all.
-- When you have a curved trunk, tilt it. That way it will look more natural than if it is upright.
-- Don't just distribute the branches left-right-center, make sure you have a front branch. Marc then told us that his sensei tried to explain the importance of a front branch, but that he (Marc) didn't know sufficient Japanese to properly unhderstand. So his sensei illustrated his meaning by saying "Imagine a beautiful woman at the beach...." (Someone please finish that anecdote!!! I laughed so much that I forgot the point.)
Marc is not only a superb bonsai stylist, he is also a great entertainer with a fantastic sense of humour. Apart from many anecdotes, he told us about the cockatoos and crocodiles he has kept (no kidding!) and the fifteen big tortoises he has now. He said that when he came home after a demanding, often stressful session or series of bonsai work, where he met lots of people and had to do many different things, the tortoises were very restful company. At the conclusion of his Sat. night demo, he suddenly said: "So, bring on thye koalas!". His great regret was that he had met koalas but wasn't allowed to give them a goo cuddle, only a little caress with one finger.
One very nice thing was that, as he said goobye, he made a point of saying how much he had enjoyed the convention, that it had all been pure pleasure, and NO STRESS.
Below a few more pics.

It was great to meet you Tex, Lisa and great to see some better pics than my Iphone snaps. I was trying out the new app that allowed me to post pics.
I don't think we could have a bad weekend at the Tops. Marc was a true pofessional, it was just another day at the office for hime crafting trees into shape. He really is the fastest wirer in the west. His 5 minute sketches truley deserve a frame. He seems to be great mates with Ryan and can't wait to see him in Canberra.
The contrast with Tony Bebb as the Australian was also a great feature. I can't wait to see what you guys do next year.
For all you international and long distance guys this really is exceptional value with accomadation and all food included you can't go wrong.

For those that missed the morning walk on the beach.

Oh and hope it is understandable that I don't give the name of the auction winner :shifty:

Thanks for the photos, Sean. Apart from Brett I didn't get to meet any of the AusBonsai Forum people, as I was otherwise occupied, but maybe we can catch up in Canberra 2013.
Herewith one of Marc's sketch pages. The bottom two are styling suggestions for the same tree, worked on at the Sun. morning workshop. Marc indicated the sketches, calling the one at bottom left "A" and the other next to it "B", and asked the owner of the tree which he preferred, A or B, and the guy said B. So Marc wrote a B under the bottom left one, and A under the one on the right. He himself obviously preferred the first. Everybody laughing, of course, but the tree owner stuck to his preference and did view A. It turned out quite beautiful.

I can only agree with every comment so far. This was the best Bonsai weekend I have ever had. I only got home last night after a full day driving, and was too shagged to do anything.

It is great the excitement this weekend created. Marc himself enjoyed the weekend immensely due to the relaxed nature of the weekend and those attending, and he is already looking forward to coming back. It was truely an honour to even be considered to present on the same weekend. I can't thank everybody enough for the support I received, and the fact people still wanted to do a workshop with me.

Marc's relaxed nature and sense of humour has almost made him a honourary Australian. :aussie: Skippy and I had many conversations with him, as well as sharing a number of drinks, and received plenty of great advice and information to improve our Bonsai and knowledge, as did everbody that witnessed his sensational work. I think we all wish the weekend could last a week. It was also a great pleasure to be able to do a workshop with Marc and get some first hand advice on an old 1975 Pine that I have had for many years, but not fully commited to any style. I spent 7 hours working on the tree under his expert guidance, and am very happy with the early results. Once I process all the photos I will get them up to share.

Thankyou to Brenda and the Tops Team for putting on another fantastic weekend. A big thankyou also to Skip and his beautiful wife and family for looking after me for the days either side of the weekend. :worship: :hooray: :tu:

I like what Tony has done with his juniper, However, my eye is drawn to the straight line but this may be the camera angle, in any case I expect it will be easily overcome.
Just the camera angle Gerard. Thanks to Kym for taking some photos for me.

Had fun working on this tree, and look forward to seeing how it fills out with some growth and pinching. The pot will need to change to something taller and slimmer.

Thanks Lisa,
I went with View A as i had this pictured in my mind before attending the workshop.
This was a wonderful learning curve and experiance for me as i have been only doing bonsai for 12 months.... I cant wait for the next opportunity to do something like this again.
It was also wonderful to meet people from various clubs and Ausbonsai, they were all very friendly and made me feel very welcome.
I finished wiring the top half of the tree and potted it today, it will stay in this pot for the next few year while it develops then into a stylish round pot.

Hey Iliya it looks great !!! You have done a crackin job !!! My only word of advice would be to top the pot up and bury more nebari so as it can shoot new roots to fill in and further develope. :tu:  :worship:

Great job on that tree Iliya, I was there when Marc Noelanders & yourself discussed the tree and you have finished it off well. Looks like you are now definitely infected with the bonsai bug, congratulations. miyagiman.

I wouldn't remove anymore but I would wire all the way to the tips. You'd be amazed at the benefit that a full wiring gives.

G'day Iliya

Certainly looking good mate. It was a pleasure to meet you as someone only new to Bonsai with so much enthusiasm and talent. You are certainly starting with the good stock, and have the vision to create with it.

Please excuse me, but I think you may have missed the angle, or inclination as Marc says it, of the tree in the pot. I may be mistaken, but I thought there was a little more angle to the left, which would bring that foliage you refer to over to the left more. I thought, and think, that the apex was more to the left of the centre of the trunk.

Keep up the good work mate.

Tony

I agree with Tony, it's just a tad too upright. See sketch. Shouldn't be too difficult to stuff some potting mix under the roots on the right.
