This post is fantastic. I'm also new and have just purchased a young Japanese maple that I'd like to start styling and everyone has given homer911 great advice (that I'll also be using for my one) It's all very insightful and helpful for newbies like myself haha

I have repotted this one a couple of weeks ago and there are some buds beginning to grow now and actually a few leaves just opened. I will take a pic tomorrow.

Congratulations homer. I've silently been following this post. I've had no experience with chops this big so I had nothing to add. Amazed to see the results. We'll done

This would have been the perfect subject for the Van Meer Technique that Bonsaiforest posted a few weeks after your chop.

Unfortunately both grafts failed.

Here is a video of the tree today. It has some good growth from what it was - ( a bare trunk)

The first branch I point to - I want it to be the primary branch and the second set I point to are what interests me. I would like to keep my bonsai looking natural as they are in the wild. But these two large branches are growing out from the same place. I know that this may be frowned upon. I'm still not sure if I should keep both to keep it natural of remove one to keep my OCD happy. : )

The third branch I point to will be the secondary branch.

I have trimmed the tree a few times this season to increase the foliage. It's fertilised every 10-14 days and in between with seasol.

Please let me know your opinion.

How tall do you want your tree? And do you have an example of what you want it to look like?

No examples. but i think i want the crown about 100mm above the original top of the tree after i cut it.

I think what you need to do now is leave this guy alone for a while. Only give it attention when a bud appears in a spot where you don't want it.

Go back a page of this thread and read the advice given by the more experienced people.

Don't forget, it's not a race.

Thanks jarad. How about those two rear branches. Just leave it natural or chop it off?
