I have a few more photos in between, but I figured the above 2 give a pretty good idea of the growth rate.

Only 5-10 more years and they might look like trees! :D

wow, nice. My first one is about 1/4 of the height of your tallest one, have about 3 more starting to sprout

Good growth mate.

Wonder how all the others are going?

The English Oak saplings (that broke the surface) are going great! I've potted them up and trimmed the tap roots. I will upload photos on Monday.

The newest sapling has actually sprouted 3 shoots any idea why? :lost:

Also, what happens to the acorn? By the look of it, the shell cracks, a root goes down, then a shoot goes up. Does the acorn just rot away?

4 of my oaks have grown considerably, but the 5th one is a little similar to jarad's, in that it is throwing out a lot of secondary and tertriary branches quite early compared to the others, which i find quite fascinating.

Hi Shibui

Everything germinated best success was from the

Cork oak, Chinese quince seeds and Snake bark maple

Only 3 of the Japanese maple seeds from you're osakazuki tree..

Thank you once again. Still on the lookout for fresh jbp seeds.

I have one that has done the same, although it looks more like 2 separate plants

I'm also interested in the fate of the acorn, as they're currently sitting on the surface a deep red colour

I think the acorn just breaks away and then decomposes

The tree uses up the food stored in the acorn until theres not much left. After that it will break away from the seedling stem and either blow away or, as Ken has said, decompose.

Sometimes you get oak seedlings that grow strong and tall, sometimes they grow multi trunks right from the acorn. Not sure if that is genetic and the tree will end up as a dwarf shrub or multi trunk tree or maybe the growing tip has been damaged so it makes more shoots to compensate. Keep an eye on them for us and see what happens.

Thanks for the explanation Ken and Neil.

When I was slipping them into the larger pots one had actually sent a shoot down to the bottom of the pot as well as one straight up.

Here are the saplings as of Friday:

It's simple Jarad,
Like people, some trees are just ... Schizophrenic! So they grow multiple ... Heads.

I don't think there is much hope if they have not come up now.
Weeping varieties are always less fertile so not surprised that they have not germinated. Upright vars are normally quite good and I'm surprised none have grown for you.
