I did remove a few larger roots but nothing majorly significant, and it was done pretty early in spring. Do you think it is work removing the soil & re-potting in a courser well drained mix & treat with a fungicide (if so which type would be best). The soil at the moment is only straight premium bonsai mix with nothing else.

Cheers

Mats suggestion was to defoliate and drench with a systemic fungacide. If it is a soil borne pathogine I would think it is in the tree now and changing the soil will not help.

Hopefully Mela will add in how she is going with it?
It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

This still doesn't explain why mine have improved (just like last year) after treatment with insecticide. :? Maybe my issue was something else???
I really do wish they'd hurry up and grow.

It could be a combination of things teejay?
I have had some that seem to grow through it and others just can't push past it!

Yeah you might be right actually. On second thought, I still have one or two (a japanese maple in particular) which are still showing signs, or haven't wanted to grow on from the damage.
I really do wish they'd hurry up and grow.

Just went down & spoke to the local Horticulturalist & he thinks in my case that it is some type of Bug or mite, so I'm going to give it a spray & see what happens. I guess his guess is as good as anyone's though. If nothing happens after 4-6 weeks i will have to try another tactic. He said that some leaves showed evidence of spider mights? I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Hmmmmm...bugger, I guess I'll have to wait & see...lol...I could treat both but I think I might try Process of elimination for curiosity sake. Hope I don't damage the tree to much.

Cheers Brett, I'll keep you posted. fingers crossed

Just letting you all know that mine seems to be insect related.... After careful inspection i found all affected trees had tiny insects (think tip of a ball point pen) on the new growth.... I sprayed with confidor. Might be worth checking your trees by tapping new growth tips over a sheet of white paper to see if you have any "moving specks".

They seemed to only target trees that were a little weak due to having had hard work done on them either via pruning or heavy root work.

jow,

this sounds like a standard thing for all insects and pests, they always pick on an unhealthy tree..

these tiny insects on the new growth? did you have tiny little flys that would buzz round after you water aswell? i think they are a different bug all together, but just curious, occasionally i see one here or there when i am water my trees.

Not to worry, all of my trident maple (10+ trees) had the same problem. It's been raining here for the last 2 weeks and the new leaves come out just fine. I found that all the big tridents at the Australian Bonsai Grower nursery have it too. I was explained that they got dried wind and heat.
Always we hope someone else has the answer.

i have drying winds here that have seemed to not stop for months now and havent had any problem with curling leaves. only problem i had was one trident started coming out of dormancy, pushed 4 new leaves out, got hit by a wind then the leaves dried up and the tree never recovered  :? that didnt make me to happy either. it was gonna be a ripper little tree..

If you guys wanted anymore proof that this is not just a disease for unhealthy plants how about when it starts to attack the weeds
weed.jpg
I pulled these weeds out of a cherry that is on the back burner. This is pretty congested here but the Cherry and everything around it is going fine :? Anything that shows signs of this has been well ventilated since leaf break.
cherry.jpg
This is a picture of a trident that should be growing a nice strong leader but has been my biggest fear of losing.
I don't think it will last much longer without a cure.
trifun.jpg
I gave this tree a dose of triforine systemic fungicide yesterday but today I found that the fungus is now visible on the branches.
I can see you.jpg
I think I have my first fatality from this. I believe I posted the trident above that is a root over ornament. One of my first trees that came with my Japanese hornbeam.

I get the bravo tomorrow. Fingers crossed

Not sure how many are following this still, but My tree I posted a few pages back has bounced back great. I think it was a little streesed, not totally sure as I also used confidor. But it's now charging along, so I think I will let it recover for another year & start styling next season?

Cheers
