This is one UGLY tree Matt

Indeed Matt, but one I'd still like to have in my collection, good or bad or ugly it's all about the emotions it provokes from within hey? If I saw that in wilderness I'd definitely be intrigued to sit underneath and take it in its' centuries, beauty in eye of beholder and all that

Australian nature at its best and a tree that looks like something we aspire to in another hemisphere.

An Oak or a Maple perhaps even a twin trunk do they meet the ratio. Yes Matt that is what it is, when you have tried to say this to young people they tell, you your old, so we go back and live our lives in Peace.

you are cracking me up Pup. But if you feel that strongly that it breaks the ratio rules and, after careful consideration, you cannot possibly keep it, can i have it. I dont mind being a "lil ol rulebreaker"

I didn't get it when people said they were gonna get rid of trees cause they didn't meet the ratio. Why not restyle instead of wasting all that work?

And this is the essence that is captured in these ratio's rather than the image be diluted. To my understanding this is what Bonsai was intended for. To portray an ancient tree in miniture.

what I meant was, an artist of any kind, be it painting, sculpture or bonsia, usually has a set style and he/she can admire some other artist's work but still have reservations because it may not be what they like, their style. It would be like Micheal Angelo looking at a painting by Piccaso (both great artist) what do you think Micheal Angelo would say. It is only a true lover of all art which makes a great art critique.

But I am confused slightly Ant. You post all these trees, but no comment on each one. Do you like them ? or are you showing what should not be done?
What is the ratios of each? This last lot, there is quite a few that are nearer to 6:1 than Sumo to my eye?

Dont be confused; I didnt post to discuss each tree. i posted to generate a feeling for dimension and proportion. i didn't sit and analyse these trees i posted them at a quick glance. This is the feeling i get when i look at these trees. By eye, no ruler, i measure lower down than to many of you. There is so much more to it than the base of the tree. Sumo is to far fetched for what im talking about and big foot syndrome doesnt work either. big foot meaning to wide across the nebari / base for the actual girth of the trunk. The nebari to the tachiagari is what dictates dimension for me. Marriage and smoothness of taper play the next part of the interaction. There are some great examples of that in these posts an some not so great but yet still evoke this feeling for me. This is all for the beholder's eye's Some will look, feel and get where im coming from and some wont, Yet/Ever. Thats life. My bonsai journey has takin a turn last weekend to the degree that i cant look at trees the same way i used to. What i do know is that my collection will improve dramatically for it. i look forward to showing you all. I also look forward to being part of the movement that is now well and truly in motion. To all of you that have taken this feeling home and have got down to the buisness already, i commend you. Stay strong and true to the cause, for you and Australian bonsai will reap the rewards. Thats it for me here, its now time to get to work. I leave you all with these...
