Its purely the way they are grown. All azalea's are naturally basally dominant, meaning that they will tend to produce many trunks from the base. Everything you get from a nursery or out of a garden will be a shrub with lots of skinny trunks but the ones you see on the japanese web sites have been grown specifically for bonsai so they have always been pruned to a single trunk. All they're energy has been restricted to that one trunk and they can become quite massive with time.Loretta wrote:Thanks Psymo, but how come they all seem to have fabulous thick trunks??
