This is such an awesome tree!! It makes me wanna go out and yell at my jacarandah seedlings to grow already. Ive had them in miserable little pots and they havnt really taken off. I might give them the care they deserve this season to try and produce something like this!! Absolutely love it

Hi Ken,

Have you ever cut back hard during summer? I have a Jacaranda that lost some of it's inner shoots (I didn't get around to thinning the summer growth ) and I was thinking maybe I don't need to wait until late winter for a hard prune.

Actually just did this one on boxing day.
Cut back all the new scraggly growth and old leaves so they will shoot new and fresh.
the end of flowering on garden specimens is a good indicator for me

I was thinking of cutting off the end growth to a bare branch and hope for some backbudding. It produces back buds along the mature barked trunk but not on 1 or 2 year old branches where I want it. Any ideas if this would work this time of year?

Hmm never had any issues back budding, but cannot remember if i have ever had them on newish growth.
the recent cut back will tell us though

I was asked about hard cutting back on Jacarandah, but never got to post the pics and as i had a few minutes today, thought i night get a few extras and post them all.

I cut back the younger branches hard and allow the new buds to develop and the closeups show the length i can trim back to with no issues. these were taken in Early Jan after only a few weeks from cutting The overall tree at that time An the tree today, I have not had much time at all this year so have not done any real maintenance or work except on te odd time to cut out the growing tips.
I allow the new branches and shoots to get to about 2 - 3 sets of leaves, then cut back to one and this reduces the size of the compound leaves markedly they are an unusual species for Bonsai but are easy to look after and robust with great looking bark

Looking great. I can vouch for cutting hard, I chopped my yearlings down to a third and they came back with vigour. Not great photos but the first was on January and the second photo was just now.

Hey! Old post but I was wondering how your jacaranda is doing after some years without an update? I'd love to see some new pics!

I recently rescued an abandoned, half dead jacaranda and I was a little discouraged by the big leaves and the supposed difficulty in defoliating and keeping the leaves looking nice as a bonsai (or so I've read).. But this post completely changed my mind! I'm still a little confused as to how defoliating and leaf size reduction works with this kind of leaves, but nothing a little research can't help with! I'm looking forward to seeing my little one grow big and beautiful like yours in time

I have been travelling a bit and lived in ACT for 12 months a year or so ago. a few of my trees had a watering issue and the Jac was one. it has recovered a little and got quite a few new shoots since but it has been set back quite a bit. In the next few weeks I need to work on it so will update this thread when i do.
Suffice to say i thought i lost it but it did eventually bud after about 6 months dormant
