Andrew Legg wrote:Elmar, I think what you need is to get the tree growing and the hit it with a really low cut to get that shape/movement. Wire and grow from there. Start it all by getting a good nebari so that you know where to make the first cut.
Thanx Andrew. Most likely right - the trick is knowing HOW low to cut it! I haven't got it correct yet
MJ - good luck and take notes! Im starting to now and its amazing how much you forget...

In the case of this particular tree, I'd estimate it was cut at about 3 to 4 cms from the root level. I'd aim to keep a side branch for the new tree, and a back sacrifice branch very low to keep the base thickening. Also, by getting it into the ground to let the roots go, you will help create the flair.

So I thought I'd pop a few more trees up here. First up is an olive yamadori that has rooted well. Like always because of my pot fetish it goes in a bit soon!

Then for a bit of contrast my bougie that is going bonkers. Needs to go in a pot at some point, but just enjoying it as is at the moment!

Then next up a juniper that is recorded in the first page of this thread. As is now.....

I have decided to show this tree next year at our club's Easter show, and I found a nice piece of slate that I've had for ages. Today it went on. Just needs a bit of moss round the edges to hide the much, a bit of branch adjustment and growth on the back that was over-shaded and it will be looking nice I think.......

Cheers,

Sweet!!
I think you can be very proud of that Juniper composition. Do you get a lot of general public through your easter show? I think this kind of tree can get a lot of attention - as a landscape its probably easier to associate with for the casual viewer. Who knows what the judges will think - I certainly like it and think you have a shot at the peoples choice award at the very least....

Hey Steve,
We get a good few folks through, but mainly subject to the weather on the weekend. I must say that I'm feeling landscapes increasingly attractive. They seem to have just that little bit of extra creativity involved.
Thanks for the vote of confidence mate.

There is nothing quite like the bright green buds of an elm in spring!

Hi Andrew,
It looks like Spring has sprung in your neck of the woods... there is light at the end of the tunnel then!
It's always nice to see the buds pop.
I was wondering if you have an update on the big Grey Owl juniper you posted on the first page of this thread?? Would love to see how it is coming along....

Here you go Ryceman. Your post reminds me that there is some work to be done on this one. I must get that first left branch down more and give it a general tidy up.

Looking super healthy Andrew, thanks for the update - love looking at progressions over the years, it's great to see where trees end up!

And you have inspired me to do some fixing up. General clean up and wiring (have no thin wire so I can't do the smaller branches) and had to sort out the heavy short branch high up on the right. It was growing in too much of an upward direction and way to heavy to bend over such a short distance. I decided to Jin the front and bring a thinner back branch down and forward.
The top must grow out a bit more and then I may try to compact that a bit more. It's a pretty scruffy juniper though so difficult to compact the foliage.

Nice job, good wiring - better branch positioning (particularly bottom left) & I like the new Jin. I really like this tree & look forward to seeing it continue to develop : thanks for posting, looking forward to the next one...
