You might want to engage in some defoliation if you want them to survive.

All the pines i collected have passed on

Except this last one which went through a different timing and procedure.

Firstly; let me mention that the plantation it came from was under siege from catterpillar's by October. munching away on all the new needles of the newly elongated candle's. Other than that What you see is what you get. Nothing else was cut away. This is how it was dug out on the 18th of Oct. 2009. The root ball with its original soil was kept in tact and only chopped back enough to fit in the box and filled back with my soil. Watering it as it needed, on an average of every 2 to 3 days. This tree is pushing growth very nicely now and in the heat it has had daily water. I have even started to give it some food in the last month. It has stayed in shade the whole time but does get some indirect sun in the mid to late afternoon. I will introduce it to more sun in mid Autumn. The biggest lesson learnt here was to never bare root a freshly collected radiata ever again and leave as much growth on it as possible.
These next few pics were taken today.
1st Comparing with a tree next to it that was collected a week before and bare rooted and two large crowns cut off the top. Big difference!!!

2nd and 3rd new growth pushing.

My biggest question is; Did the defloiation of the new needles by the catterpillar's have anything to do with its success??? Any info prior to this tells us that once the candles have opened its too late

Not sure Ant. The two I got on the same day (if this is dancing with bull horns

) are going the same but had no catapillar damage. Both root systems were dealt with the same as yours. One had 1/3 foilage cut off. The other left complete. Both are growing the same as yours.
Same goes for Els one but he took loads of foilage off his.

I dont think we were dancing! If i remember correctly we were struggling and sweating.

yeah well what to say to that? Is it the fact that the root balls were left in tact??? Is that the one most important factor??? still

Not sure mate. I think it is the main factor.
If I remember correctly. I lifted the rootball slightly and danced around the hole till the half cut tap root snapped off
cheers
