Seems to be a pretty good hit rate... at least 21 of 24 .... fun experiment for a first timer. Thanks for starting the thread and getting me motivated to try.

Trident seeds from Shibui are going strong but no action yet from the Chinese Quince sadly.

I've finally joined the race i received my Japanese white pine seeds the other day. So they will spend the week in the fridge til they pop. I have two bags. One with the floaters and ones that sunk. See how this pans out.

I've started on my black pine seeds and in a couple more weeks ill start my allocasuarina verticillata.

Howdy .... now that my little cedars are underway - when do I transfer them out of their little greenhouse ... I have now opened the vents to acclimatise to a slightly cooler environment but the lid is still on. Any tips for a successful transition from crawling to walking .... perhaps take the lid off soon ... keep out of any hot direct sun... then slip pot out of the tiny seed tray sections into their own little pots in Autumn or is that too long before slip potting!

Good job MJL! Sorry I have no advice to offer. I do have a soft spot for cedars for some reason. Would happily buy some seed if you collect some again. Looking forward to watching your progress with these.

I put my cedars outside uncovered but in sheltered spot in May, as they were coming through the surface. They survived the winter and seem to be doing well. I also am wondering if I should be repotting them now particularly as mine aren't separated like Marks.
Although 4 out of 5 of my acorns grew roots, just one has sprouted. This will need to be slip potted, as the pot is small and the seedling is hard against one side.

Some tridents just starting to stick their heads out. I ended up planting some Japanese maple too but nothing from those yet.

I am not surprised your cedar seedlings survived. Our winters are no challenge for these which come from far colder climates.

Now is a great time to separate and pot your seedlings into individual pots. They will not even notice any root reduction now and will soon take off and grow far better given some space. I usually give the developing roots a hard prune to remove the downward growing roots at this stage so that they will develop better lateral roots which will later become the nebari of your bonsai.

After root trim/potting up, how long should we hold off before fertilising?

I don't think there is any real need to hold off on fert. I know there's a myth that it burns roots or some such but I have not actually seen that happen. All my potting mix has controlled release fert mixed in so everything gets light fert from day 1 and the plants do fine.
On the other hand there is no great need to fertilize straight away. The seedlings will be quite alright without added fert for a week or 2.

On another note, all my Japanese maple seeds in the fridge germinated and I planted them a couple of days ago.

The trident maples weren't showing any signs of life, but I threw them in a pot anyway and we'll see what happens

These will be my next project, the other day while sitting outside one of these fluttered down on my lap and by the next day there were hundreds if not thousands all over the place. This is just what I collected around our sitting area and there is probably too many of them anyway but going to plant them out and hope for the best.

They are Tetraclinis articulata seeds They are a bit of an odd one related to cypress and are the only one of their species.

This is the first time I have been here that I have noticed them dump their seeds like this, and of course now it's raining so I'm guessing they got their timing spot on.

Hoping they don't need any special treatment.
