Hi all, I am happy to introduce this lovely JBP to my collection. I went for a look at a favourite nursery of mine today, Baloc Bonsai Nursery in Ardeer, Melbourne. This place is amazing, run by a lovely bloke who once warmed up, doesn't want to let you leave the place. He has some fantastic trees, all with a story and plenty of age. He explained how he is not a fan of cutting trees down for taper. He believes in traditional methods of Bonsai creation, that being shaping trees from an very early age and I believe his trees are of true age and not exaggerated by any means. This place is definitely worth a visit if ever in Melbourne.
Again, the pics do not do the tree justice, it's very hard to produce a 3d image with branch placement and depth perception.

I like the pine too. Nice material. A lot rooms to work on. I hope to see it again in the future.

I have not visited him for a long time. Last time I was there, his place virtually filled with pines!

G'day Scott, mate I am totally up for critiquing on the tree, I see a few years of work ahead yet. I would really appreciate some advice on where to take this little guy.

daiviet, , yes I cant totally blame Tran, I was also very talkative and reluctant to leave. Had it not been for my girlfriend waiting patiently for 2 hours I probably would have volunteered my services as an apprentice

Hi all, Im after some critiques on my newly acquired JBP. If you know JBP then please give me some direction. The tree does need some wiring, that I know. Refinement is not much of a challenge as needles are getting pretty close to the desired Finish.

if it's my tree, i'l start by lowering the first thick branch to even the spacing. i might anchor it down to the pot.

Hi bki, I agree, ill lower the first branch and wire any other obvious branches. After that I'm not sure what else this tree needs?

Nice little tree, it defintiely has loads of potential and looks to be quite healthy.

My first observation is that it is planted too high in the pot. I am not sure what the roots are like but perhaps it would be best to lift it out of this pot and place it into a deeper one for now (do not touch the roots). Then you can work on the roots over the next few seasons and get it back into that pot.

I'd also change the planting angle 30 degrees to the left. Once that is sorted, wire all of the braches and then as you mentioned bring the majority of them down and get a bit of shape into them. I wouldn't change the large one on the left as the planting angle will sort that. You'll be amased at what wiring along will accomplish on JBP.

There looks to be quite a few branches coming from single points on the trunk. I wouldn't be alarmed at this stage though, there won't be any over thickening this year.

Then I would just water and fertilse regularly for the rest of the growing season.

In Autumn, you can do some clean up and simplification of the existing branches.

Scott, great advice and very much appreciated. I will apply this to the tree and see how we're looking in a couple of weeks. Now if Im looking at the tree, am I rotating the tree 30 degrees to my left? I dont know if you could vert that change in angle for me?
