I dug this english elm in August 2010, it stands more than a metre tall. After it failed to backbud the obvious solution was an air layer?
But I like the trunk with its wounds and bends so I have decided to keep the height.
Hopefully the result will be both unconventional and pleasing.

I see a proud old survivor plucked from the forests, the battered old trunk & bare height work beautifully. I would be proud to have it on my bench.

For me, the bit that doesnt work is the 'bonsai' treatment of the top, a single cloud would look much better with the simple lines of this tree.

Hi Gerard , waste not want not , there's nothing wrong with being different .You may not see to many literati elms , but at least you have one . I find i difficult to waste anything i collect that's probably the reason i have so many toys to play with . I certainly like this tree it looks aged and refined in one .

Would have to agree with Matt.

Trunkline is great, just not sure on the apex. I would prefer something a little smaller, less refined.

I like it a lot Gerard.
Personally the first jin is a little thick for my liking and a slightly flatter apex would improve it. But sometimes you just need to play outside the rules!!!
