All ; as a follow on of Hornets thread on Ficus, viewtopic.php?f=133&t=9872#p105099 , I thought it would be interesting to start one on Melaleucas.

What different types of Melaleucas are people from different areas growing for Bonsai? .

So far this is what i'm growing ;

M.rhaphiophylla , M.preissiana , M.acerosa , M.ringens , M.armillaris ,

M.lanceolata , M.bracteata,rev green , M.bracteata,golden gem , M.incana nana , M.fulgens , M.lateritia ,

M.coccinea , M.quinquenervia , , and 5 yet to be ID'd types.

new additions= M.cuticularis , M.vividiflora .


I have some cuttings going from ; M.nesophila , M.stypheloides , M.rhaphiophylla , M.bracteata,g gem ,M.acerosa and 1 other mystery type.


I've just germinated some seeds of M.suberosa and have just sown some M.eliptica seeds.

Nice collection you have there. Mine is pretty poor, i have linearfolia, howeana (cuttings) and 2 other sp (cant remember names at the moment) whish i believe have died. Also have some seed to sow, last lot got eaten by slugs.

I am playing with M. bracteata, linearifolia and armillaris.

I am working with a large stypheliodes which has a thread going here. On Monday i am going to do a collect of another which will need an i.d on this site. It is sitting in a friends nature strip and has the most wonderful tan paper bark. It is basically a Bonsai already (i think from nature strip cutting from our council) so it will be a dig and straight into a training pot I usually put them into a large grow box but i do not think this guy will need it.

Going by the responses, not too many working with them.

I have at the moment 1 M,rhaphiophylla 2 M,cuticularis 3 M, linophylla sbp 4M, lanceolata 5 M, preissiana 6 M,linarifolia 7 M, Linarifolia X claret tops

8 M, bracteata golden gem 9 M, bracteata X revolution gold 10 M, bracteata X revolution green 11 M,Incana 12 M,nesophila 13 M,elliptica M, ringens

14 M, quinquenervia.

Which, with the amount I have is enough, unless something outstanding comes along.

It's not how many you have that counts , it's that your giving them a try that does

My mels are experimental, mostly less than a couple of years old so nothing impressive and little info on how they respond to various techniques and timing so far.
Species in training as bonsai: M. 'claret tops', M. lateritia, M. violacea (has not responded well to pruning so far), M. incana, M.incana 'velvet cushion' , M. blaeriifolia, M. hypericifolia (prostrate), M. decussata(probably?), M. quinquinervia (frost sensitive here)

Plants in pots but less than 1 year here: M. microphylla, M. micromera

In the garden but not yet as bonsai: M. thymifolia, M. fulgens, M. conothamnoides

Have tried but not survived: M. megacephala,

There's also a couple of others that I'm not certain of the species at this stage.

I do plan to increase the collection as i find more yamadori and advanced nursery stock. They really are a great genus of natives

Only had them a couple of months, so no useful information:

M. squarrosa, stypheloides, thymifolia, and this one I've lost the label of:

Only have
Melaleuca decussata "Cross Leaf Honey Myrtle". The only remaining one I have, and is in the ground at the moment. Might remove it next year and pot into pot

Hi.

As a person who has only 11 months 2 weeks learning in the ways of Bonsai, and mainly only natives (Gums) growing in the ground.I have nothing in a pot. I only read about Melaleucas taking as much in as i can, so when the time comes i may have half an idea.
