Pinus Mugo Var' Mugho #2 initial styling

Post by alpineart »

This is the Mugho's i picked up last week

,

i ripped into it over a couple of hours

.

I removed all the older branches and
100_9437.jpg
retained the 1-2 year old smaller shoots
100_9438.jpg
. The smaller trunk had plenty to work with however the taller trunk lacked finer branches .A quick wire job and a full re-pot into a 400mm plastic pot was done with a slight change in the planting angle

also and i have retained a lower branch/little trunk at the base as a sacrifice branch and to aid regrowth

. Both trunks will only have the top 1/3 retained for the final canopy, in the mean time the other branches will hopefully aid the healing of the scars . Red clay was used to seal the wounds This is only the initial styling as more movement in the right direction will be required , didn't want to over do it . More than happy with another trainer . The trunks are 500mm and 750mm high with a base of 50mm . As these grow on average 200mm per year in a couple of years it should be ready for an over haul . I will pinch the growth out over the next 2 growing seasons .

I love twin trunk pines Alpine and this looks very nice with a lot of potential as it matures etc :tu2:
Can't wait to see it down the track after future stylings when you bend the trunks further!
You wrote...". Both trunks will only have the top 1/3 retained for the final canopy."...pardon my ignorance but just to clarify your use of words (which is fine by the way),
does this mean that in time the trunks will be reduced by 2/3rds their current height :?: sometimes the old noggin doesn't work so great :lost:
Nice work!
Cheers, Dario.

Hi Dario , no further reduction in height .Each tree will have an upper canopy only an over large Bunjin type canopy from 2/3 up to the apex . The shorter tree will sit inside the curved larger trunk .Basically another Father-Son twin trunk .I had 3 idea's for this tree

1/ Retain the smaller trunk and shari the taller trunk completely or reducing the shari down to 250mm

2/ Use it as a semi/full cacade

3/Twin trunk Father/Son .

I still like the first idea and could always layer the large trunk off if it develops well .Another option would be to use the finer lower branch/trunk as a triple trunk clump style , it exits just below the middle of the lower fork in the 2 trunks . I could also layer this small trunk off after it has developed and done the job expected , that is to aid fatten the base another 20mm. Some of this seasons growth on the upper branches was 250mm long so they certainly put out some serious growth for a Mugo . I hope to get back budding on the taller trunk similar to the small one . It has new shoots in between the old whorls .There is a few buds present so we will see how it goes .

Cheers Alpine
