Hi there pest aficionados can you please ID this little critter found while re-potting a gardenia -- seamed to be the only one.
Approx 15mm long, deep brown shinny hard cocoon like shell -- no movement.

Hi cuwire,
not certain which insect this is rom, but it is an egg case.
Cockroach egg cases look similar.
Hope that helps a little ?

Not a cockroach, but it will morph into some sort of moth or butterfly and fly away eventually.

I agree Damian that's a cocoon, not an egg case. Its the pupal stage of some sort of moth I'd say. If you want to find out, David, put it in a jar or other closed container and wait for it to hatch into the adult stage.

Thanks guys, just did a quick google search and found this image.
Yes seems it is a moth cocoon.
I never knew moths formed these, so thanks for the chance to learn something.

Thank you all for your help,
Not a root chomper with a family - that's good news. And yes it's in a jar and I shall report back if we have a new friend.
Thanks again
David
