Hi guys I have been given a frangipani tree.
So does any one know if you can bonsai it or any known problems
Size is 45cm tall and has a 5cm trunk.

Any help would be great.

Well put it this way - you can grow a franipani in a bonsai pot. But it will never be a true bonsai as the leaves do not reduce enough to look convincing.

Hey mate, I would not even consider a frangipani as a bonsai, there is far better stock out there, good luck. Dark1

Hhmmm It would have to be BIG 100-200cm, even then it would not ramify finely nor will the leaves reduce but I think it could be done convincingly.

I might even have a go myself with one of the big cuttings I have growing (up to 30cm dia)

Ps Bonsai purists will never accept it as such, the same ones will debate the use of Palms & Cycads as well. I own an old Cycad viewtopic.php?f=130&t=10626 & have seen a few Palms that succeeded in creating the image of a normal one in miniature & really isnt that what its all about?

Cycads although nice , ( i have one myself), are not Bonsai as they are not styled trees. the fronds reduce yes, but you cannot style them at all. Thus they are used as Kusamono / or accompaniment plants.

Re Frangipani, (Plumeria), the leaves will not reduce, and they will not develop fine branching either so they will not ramify well. They are quite slow growing as well.

They grow well in pots, but would be a terrible tree to try an bonsai.

fiveoffive, just leave the frangipani and enjoy as a beautiful tree. What colour is it? With mine, I have them only in pots at the moment as the root system is shallow and takes a couple of years to establish. I place in a mixture of sand and soil, more sand than soil. Good luck!

Iv'e tried doing this, since its my girlfriends favorite flower, I took a cutting this year and have notice a leaf reduction of about 1/3 the size of the original, but that's still about 7cm long, just one qustion, can frangipani ever back bud? Im having problems with that, and seem to think it never will. If that is the case the plant cant be left at a small size at it continues growing vertically from the tips of its branches.

I started this topic and i still have not got around to trying one.
My Failing with the Monkey pod tree ( due to it needing tropics ).

I have not had a go. I would love to see if anyone is tho.
Give the The desert rose if you want some thing to try as well. ( red desert rose Adenium )

mine are just alive (i think).

If we do not try new things we stagnate and die

Just put one in a Bonsai pot and call it bonsai then

I had a Frangipani I grew from seed. 4yrs old and less than 5cm tall, kept it in a small bonsai pot.
But put it this way Tony, it was never going to be a good bonsai.

Here's a thought, the larger a frangipani bonsai is the more suitable the frangipani bonsai becomes.

]Try your local cacti and succulent specialist nurseries, if you have any, they should have them under the name Adenium.

Hi guys, both buntings and masters in Brisbane have desert roses, and last night I found this frangipani in my sisters back yard in a pot un cared for and on its side. So I took it home and potted it, it's one tree.

Ps. And yes they do back bud.
