can anyone recommend the best time to dig a camellia?

Ohhh, thats a toughie. I dug a large 50 year old Camellia just before Christmas and it survived and is now thriving. I guess it is the old rule Paddles, if it has to come up then dig it, if you have time, prepare it and dig at the end of August.

I think a good rule of thumb for flowering plants is - straight after flowering. Root growth is at a premium at this time. Good luck.

Be careful when digging it out.
Apparently the roots spread out around the tree on the surface.
Its main root system.
There are some deeper roots, but try to avoid breaking those top roots.
Dig larger to be sure...

Agree, straight after flowering is the best time. The roots of camellia are quite delicate. I've found they rip easily from the trunk, split and break, so a little tlc when handling. Fairly hardy tree though
