Heys Peoples,I was working by some pine plantations this week and noticed some stray young trees that I really wanted to grab for their trunks, but I was looking at the needles and notice they are alot longer than JBP's. Are they still suitable bor bonsai and can you reduce the needle size enough to make it worthwhile? I am pretty sure they are Radiata pines?

There are plenty of good radiarta Bonsai. One of which is in the National collection.

Needle size is a problem but not impossible to reduce.

Where in Brisbane are Radiata's growing Woz, I have lived here for 25 years and havent seen any Radiata growing. I have seen them out towards Warwick but not in Brisbane. Are you sure they are Radiata and not Pinus elliottii (slash pine).

There is a massive radiata pine plantation growing 25 minutes form rockhampton. they seem to handle the humiditry here well. Im going collecting this june as they have self seeded everywhere on the road side embankments , growing in steep angles in a very sandy soil. most are only 30 cm tall with up to 2 inch trunks. im not sure why they are staying so small as the ones on the plains are a few metres tall and very straight (boring ).

GOOD MOVE FELLAS; get on to it! im gonna collect some this winter too! might even have to get into some absailing gear to get one. haha dont worry it will be video recorded.

brad, ken got me eye on one its a good one. i'll get down to it easy enough the question is how movable its gonna be. as for funny home video's might have a crack for 200k. but sorry that aint enough to share with BT. might start me own though.

I love Radiata pines. I have a beauty at home. They can definitely reduce in needle size and I find they back bud reasonably well too. They do need a lot of work as they grow profusely.

How could i forget.... and if for some reason i loose my marbles im sure youll remind me. looking forward to it As for the pines, there are some with good potential but a few years to make anything decent i would say. My mate wants me to go to pick some out for him and if i see something special ill put dibbs on it
