Hi

I have about 12 ficus cuttings of various species growin in perlite and grit. They were taken 4 weeks ago and after gently pulling one out and checking, it had roots about an inch long all around the base. The question is, should i transplant now into soil mix or wait until next summer? I assume it isnt wise to transplant in autumn/winter?

Adrian, you may get away with doing them but if they are only 4 weeks old, you'd be far wiser to wait, just keep watering them and getting them strong, then pot up in early spring

thats sounds like the logical thing to do. They are doing well and I would hate to lose them now. Keeping em strong then.

I am in the boat here. My cuttings are in prop sand, will they make it through the winter or should they also go into a soil mix now????

Hi Adrina,
Leave them in the pots. If you have room in your garden, plant the pots in the soil. Make sure you don't bury them to deep. Leave 25mm of the pot above the soil. Feed them and water them as usual. You will most probably have to cut them out of the pots next summer, as they should develop some serious roots.

If you don't have room in the garden, use large pots as mini gardens. Get a large pot and fill it with reasonably good mix and plant the pots in the bigger pot.

The following photos show some trees I have planted. I have dated the photos to show how quick you can get results.
I planted this Sticky Wattle after removing the Privet. This tree had very sparse foliage when planted. The foliage is so thick now you can hardly see a branch.

Hi Ray - that is some serious growth you have there. thats a real bright idea putting them in the ground like that. I do have have room in the garden but we may be moving house over winter so i wouldn't wan to rip them up in the cold. but I do have lots of pots I could use. great Idea - thanks.

Ken, i am in nor rush so I agree, I will be patient with these and plant as suggested by Ray.
