I have had this one in the shed for a while.

Can anyone out there help me to I.D. it?

I think its a pot of some kind . ---- Actually I've got one exactly the same so I will be interesed in the replies.

Not 100% sure if it is chinese or Japanese but you can see from the fingerprint like texture to the under side of the pot that it was a mould made pot. Those lines are produced usually when forcing clay into the mould. Usually that comes from pots that were made in more of a mass produced manner and generally occupy the lower end of the market. That said they still make nice pots, are generally of a good quality and finish and once they have some age to them they become even nicer. I have a few that i grow in and athough they will never become museum pots but they are much nicer than most of their modern mass produced counterparts. Guessing from other i have seen that are similar, it was probably imported to Australia 30 odd years ago and is most probably mass produced japanese as not a lot of chinese stuff was available then and the dollar was super strong against the yen which is why many pots crossed the shores then.

Personally i find that depth hard to grow in but i like to use those depth pots as suibans for stones. Just cover the holes with card and fill with sand and they make good trays for suiseki.

You are probably right about the time lines, it was icked up from a house that had a 60 odd year old resident that had long ago lost interest.

And right again, I am going to use it to play around with rocks rather than trees for a change.

I have the same pot minus the chop. What it does have is the remains of the old red & gold Made in Japan sticker

Over the years I have a number of these pot of both high end quality and the cheaper version. I have used them for group plantings and root over rock planting.

I do have a small one that is a suiban at about 24cm that I do use for water settings. This one you have could be used for a group of Ficus.


I did have a larger one I sold to Brett, I do wonder if he has used it yet?

Can I just ask a silly question- but what's a "chop"? Is it the stamp you're referring to? I have a similar pot too to the one above but no stamp- does that matter?

Is it really heavy? almost like it is made of iron (but obviously not)?

I have three pots imported by my teacher in the 1970's from Japan that are this shape, style and colour but much larger - one is my natal fig forest posted a couple of weeks ago and another is a root over rock green island fig I posted somewhere here last year. From memory they have a chop with very fine characters in it (I am afraid I cannot go and lift it over my head to see). They are a very hard and dense clay, extremely heavy (even without a tree in them) and when flicked with the fingernail have an almost metallic ring to them. They have the same drainage hole pattern as yours.
