Just wanted to ask anyone in Sydney;
I'm going to Ray Nesci Nursery today for the first time, what should I expect?
And since I'm a student I don't have much money to spend, so are his prices fair?

I think Ray Nesci's is a great all round nursery with everything Bonsai. Starts are about $4 and the next size $10.
Just for your info both Ray and Clinton will not be on duty today as they are at the Central Coast Show.

Love Ray Nesci's Nursery. Check out the seedlings, they're very cheap and good quality (aka they stand up to my newbish care).

Already styled trees start at around $40 and go up into the $100's. There's a great range of pots which are all very reasonably priced, as well as potting mix, stands, decorative pebbles, books etc.

The staff I've met are all lovely, friendly and knowledgeable.

Raw stock starters at $3:50 up to several thousand $ for ground grown stock trees ( I love drooling over these)
Large variety in species and a range of sizes from Tubestock starters, - 4inch @$10, 6-8 inch @ $20-$25, 8 inch and up for $30-$100 depending on the day and availability. Most untrained but root work done over the formative years

He has semi trained stock at slightly higher prices and a large range of trees in Poly boxes and grow bags for $150 and up

Large selection of potted up trees too .

something for everyone at a range of prices

Main thing is, allow plenty of time to browse as you do not want to be rushed at all

I walked in there one day and spent over half an hour walking around and browsing, I was keen to get a few things, but there was no staff anywhere, so I just left!

I went there yesterday and could not be more satisfied with their service and advice.

I'm a complete noob when it comes to keeping bonsai so I can't comment on variety however I can vouch that they are good honest people. They could have sold me a whole lot of stuff but they sold me the bare minimum I need to get started. I even asked for a book that would help me keep my plant alive and instead of suggesting the more expensive books, they suggested the cheapest book they have.

Along with this they were open to conversation and answered the few...probably dozens of questions I had.

For the people who haven't visited this place I definitely recommend it. Especially if you are starting out and need advice.

As a new comer to bonsai and travelling, I visited Ray Nesci's Bonsai Nursery only last week. I cannot recommend this nursery highly enough.
The staff were friendly, conversational and very helpful. The stock was to druel over and of course, buy. There was plenty of stock and variety, including pots, books, figurines, stock, soil, tools, wire etc. I loved the place. Can't wait to go back to Sydney with some money to purchase. I must remember to leave the missus at home next time so I have more time to browse and admire. Thanks to Ray and his staff for making me feel welcome.

Just got back; I can't mention enough just how good it is. I bought 4 tube stock trees (Japanese Maple, 2 Trident Maples and a Coastal Redwood), a lovely terracotta pot and some zeolite and only ended up spending $45. My price limit was $50 and I was 5 dollars under so you can understand why I'm happy. Definitely going back in a few weeks so I can see the Autumn color on some of those Maples and Elms. I was practically drooling over the $20-$40 trees down the back. I just need to acquire more money so I can be me some of those trees. AND OH MY GOD THOSE BIG TREES WERE HEARTSTOPPING. Great nursery, I fell in love with it and I think I want to start my own nursery when I finish school. Thanks everyone for the help, and the place really lived up to it's reputation.

Unusual! When was that?

On weekends if there is a bonsai show or convention / Demo on then usually Both Ray and Clinton are away. In that case there will always be on of the Girls there to serve you.
They are not Bonsai fanatics like Ray or Clinton, but know what is the correct end of a tree to cut.

If Ray or Clinton were there you would have seen them.

It is nice to see Ray and the family get the praise they deserve. Great family, great nursery. They are an asset to Australian Bonsai.

Ray is the hardest working nurseryman I have met, I have not seen a cleaner nursery. If Ray is not run off his feet by customers he is usually not far away working the cuttings area or such. Occasionally you might have to shout out for a little attention. But I don't know any other place that will bring you an umbrella when it starts to rain 5 minutes before closing time

The stock is great value and the variety of species is incredible. If you are after a specific rare plant or tree mention it to Ray I have been surprised several times. He is an avid species collector. Also if you are after more advanced stock ask Ray what he can do.

Ray is a great salesman. It is hilarious to watch him doing a demo on a great accent he has been working with such as aquilegia and mention that he just happens to have some outside for sale today. To then watch the stampede to his stand after the demo and the "empty" table 5 minutes later.
As it has been noted he also has alot of integrity when selling and that is what keeps people coming back Maybe a little to integrity for me as the bugger won't sell me larch or beech as he believes they will die in my climate. I had to grow my own larch from seed
I hope Ray is at the Topps weekend this year as I will join the rush to his table this time

Any know what he has as starter stock?
Like a stock list.

Just go there anyway,well worth the trip and then you might buy something a little bigger stock and not have to wait to get a decent tree.
He has got a full range of starters,but he is of the old school,don`t think he would have a stock list,as it changes all the time.

I have Some very very nice tree's ( even if i do say so my self )
But i also like growing tree's, and buying stock that i can not get in my area.

I been to rays once a long time ago and your right worth the trip and good price's
i was just seeing if any one knows what's instock.
