Hey all

I have a dozen red flowering gums in the ground at the moment which im gojng to do much best to replicate the exact tree in the picture I love the shape of the tree and I can just imagine how great it would be to have a bonsai that looks like that! Thought i would post this pic as this is my main goal at the.moment.

The tree does look very good. What are you going to use to start your bonsai? If you have a tree that you are going to work into your bonsai, could you post a picture please.

I am doing some air layering experiments at the moment on a 20foot sapling and 2 flowering gums.

Nice! I have often thought about trying one of these, but I've been turned off working with eucs. I wonder if this sp. will respond

Hey treeman I was shown what you can do with them by Pup the other day at a meeting, it was no larger then 250mm tall and the largest leaf was around 5mm long with awrsome ramification, that was a massive eye opener for me and what is possible with eucs (Thanks for bringing that along Pup) maybe if we are lucky he will post a pic of it?

Ray I am using seedlings as I cant find anything larger at the moment, hmmm air layering a 20 foot sapling.. That gives me an idea, I know of a few unwanted lemon scent gums around that size I want to experriment with but dont wanna have to get the excavator out haha

Here is the set that was there last monday. From top to bottom, Casaurina equisetifolia, Punicia granatum nana, Eucalyptus ficifolia, Olea europa. and on mini stand Juniperus sqamata.

Hi Pup, thanks for sharing, just wondering if the Casuarina esquisetfolia belongs to you? If so could you maybe start a thread sharing a few tips please? I have quite a few that are grown from seed, approx 1 year old now, and I have found it hard to find info on these as bonsai. I have noticed they are very popular in Indonesia and I think Thailand aswell, but from the trees I have seen in the wild, I can't see how you can produce the dense "foliage pads" as seen on trees from the countries I mentioned, and also the one you posted a picture of.

It is mine Luke as are all of them. The Casuarina was purchased as a large long tree for $10-00 at a clearance. It was chopped back and has been styled in the last few years by pinching the new growth. Like all Casuarinas, they bud back well and respond to pinching. In the Shohin section you will find a post of this tree.

Thanks for the reply Pup, I have just searched "casuarina" in the shohin section, but did not regognise your tree. Could you please provide a link to it? Thanks heaps
