Hi gang,

This is a hinoki cypress group planting that I did with hatsugi kato in 1987. 25 years later it's starting to develop quite well. This is a very large group, it's 1.2m in height, the main trunk is quite thick and the photo doesn't do it justice.

I realise after taking the photo I need to severely clean it up, the foliage is looking a bit scruffy.

Do you have any older photo's of this group as I think I might have some of this group from a bonsai show way back is the very early 90's so if yu eed some just let me not & I'll post them up so that everyone can see how it has changed over the year's

I think the group setting doesn't do it justice though, great tree.

Bloody nice group Brian. Won't take much to clean that up.

Don't mean to be picky, but I would love to see a photo from right in front to see the 2nd tree better. I reckon that smaller one would look closer to that beautiful main tree also.

Hi Brian , about time you had some serious input . This is one hell of a bonsai . Now if you ever get bored with it i have a twin trunk Chamaecyparis obtusa that has spent 4 years being layered off , with this this setting and my 600mm twin trunk i would have an awesome forest .. Glad you posted this one up ,i might get the courage to have a look at removing the layer . Looking forward to seeing a few more topics and 2 man tree's.

I thought the two trees looked odd, the older photos are more convincing of a group, it certainly shows what 20 years will do, the bark now is amazing, I'd really like to see you get stuck into it, clean it up and wire it!

One of the two most impressive large hinoki bonsai I have seen. One in real life in Garden World, a single large one.

This group is just amazing.

How are you moving the pot about?

Wow Brian I wasn't expecting that when I opened this post, very jealous. Hinoki is one of my favourite species and that has to be one of the best ones around.

Just my opinion!!!!!!!!! but I would be inclined to remove the small trees and refine the big one on it's own

A very valuable bonsai! Congratulations on having succeeded in keeping it alive and growing, over all those years.
A question: have you still got that rectangular, shallow pot in which this group was first exhibited? If so, I'd repot the trees back into it, to show it to better advantage. This would also allow you to slightly rotate the group, so as to get the second tree out of its hiding place behind the main one, while more root space might help the smallest tree to grow better. At the moment, because the 2nd tree is barely visible, there is no size transition between nr 1 and nr 3. If, by some bad luck, you no longer have that pot, it would pay to chase up something similar, or, if that fails, to construct a slab (with some depth) from fibreglass. At any rate, your beautiful trees really need a bigger, better container. Good luck!
