Hi There.
My Name is Jason and this is my first post.Not sure if this is the correct spot for this post,So i apologize in advance.

I got into bonsai's about 8 months ago,and have been handed down a few from my granddad.He used to be greatly involved in the bonsai community.
They are all going quite well as he has been guiding me along the way. One of the fig's i have,is apparently around 35years old.I repoted it and pruned it back
to some shape when i got it.It is nice and healthy, but ever since i got it i am yet to decide where i want to take it.in regards to shape
and style of bonsai.

I was wondering if anyone could have a quick look at it and recommend some style or path i should take the tree.
being so old,i am hesitant to do anything too drastic,but i am completely open and grateful to any input.

Wow got some crazy trunk and root fusion going on, maybe we should wait till spring and after you have defoliated to give styling advice. Looks very old and unique.

Trunk and root fusion? thats a good thing right? lol Could i just get a little info on defoliating? is that just like pruning. "foili" would be to do with foliage ?

Very nice trunk/root fusion & yes that is a good thing defoliating the tree means removing all it's leaf's but this is not done till spring time so best wait till then, this will not hurt the tree at all but will help it bud back plus once defoliated it will make it much easier to see what's under there, also find your nearest bonsai club & go along meet some other bonsai people as we are all very friendly & are willing to help. ps welcome to the world of bonsai

Sorry lol like Hacker clarified i meant trunk/roots fusion. By defoliation I meant leaves and tips. Way of ramifying branches and it gives you a good look at what branches can be removed or utilized in the styling of the tree.

I would be proud too, my grandad has been a nurseryman and landscaper for the council for a long time, he loves nature and gardening, and it gives us common ground to share. I will always look back on it fondly.
A tree passed down is a living reminder of our family and holds a story that can be passed down to your grandkids.

Lol they do look bare but elegant at the same time. But like hacker said not for awhile yet, and joining a club or finding a local bonsai enthusiast to sit down and access the tree in person is the best bet, We can only help so far.

Welcome, jjwebb to ausbonsai. You have done the right thing by putting up a post. You will get some terrific advice here. There is so much good information on this site. Thanks to the developers of this site and the ones who keep it updated.
