Just out of curiousity, what is the purpose of growing trees in styrofoam boxes? I've read the "Fast growth method", but do these boxes serve a specific purpose if you just plant them without doing the fast growth method? I don't mean to hijack, just curious.

G'Day TFG we use these boxes as they are larger and shallower than a standard round plastic pot which helps encourage the root system. They are also usually free from fruit and vegetable shops who just throw them away. So bonsai with a low carbon footprint :tu:

Correct me if im wrong but they are good for holding warmth in which is good for root development. Going to pick some up today.

some reasons to use them

excellent Drainage
Nice and wide relative to height. easily cut down further
Quite large but yet very light
Makes use of unwanted packaging.
Light colour and foam keeps the roots cool
Can paint with waterbased paint to make not so bright :-)

they last about 5 years before starting to deteriorate and as the hold a large amount of Soil, will allow the roots grow freely almost as if the tree is in the ground, but you can still move it easily.

Try your local Fruit n Veg, I've never come away empty handed. They find it hard to get rid of them 'responsibly'. Coles won't put out though, they have 'policies'. Good luck...

I was at the new local IGA today and they have a nice handy area containing boxes. Sitting right there was two perfect styro boxes. Although I still have a few at home it was too easy and I put two in the shopping cart.
Then the misses upped me saying they are for people to pack their shopping into. Whaaaaattt :tounge:
The checkout chick offered to put the dog food in them to keep the misses happy

Personally I would rather use a large nursery pot as that will always have better drainage and root development but that will use up way toooo much soil.
Duck roll and I am outta here :D
