Hi guys, as promised in velvet's thread - viewtopic.php?f=9&t=10757 I have started my own thread documenting the process of my seed stratification. I am following the method I found here although there is some confusion as to whether to use sphagnum or peat moss with the charcoal. https://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com/t8531 ... from-seeds Hopefully I have some success :fc:

Fingers crossed I get some healthy seedlings sprouting over the next 90 or so days :fc:

I will keep you all updated of the progress. Enjoy :D

ZOMG lol.

Looks like you have invested a fair bit of time in prepping these guys, hope the bonsai gods bless you with 100% success.

The local nurseryman said we might be better off with a bed of soil/moss/sand ect lay the seed on top and then a layer of fallen maple leaves to simulate nature. Food for thought next time.

Here is a list of the seeds I have stratifying -

Acer shirasawanum -autumn moon
Acer palmatum "momoiro koyasan"
Acer palmatum (standard)
Acer pensylvanicum (moosewood) x7 (some odd leftover seeds as a bonus form the supplier)
Cedrus libani - (Cedar of Lebanon)
Acer palmatum "iroha momiji"
Acer p. "purpureum"
Acer p. "hogyoko" (they were labelled as hogyoko, although I believe it is hogyoku)
Acer griseum - (paperbark maple) x3 (some odd leftover seeds) - These are often sterile seeds, so I ma not holding my breath for success.
A.palmatum "Orange fire" (unknown cultivar by seed seller so he named it)
A.heldreichi
A.campestre
A.davidii (snake bark maple)
A.buergerianum (trident maple)
A.truncatum
A.palmatum "kinram"
Stewartia monadelpha
Korean hornbeam
Pinus Thunbergii (Japanese black pine)
Pinus parviflora (Japanese white pine)
Liquidambar formosana

I have Acer negundo aureomarginatum x6 (some odd leftover seeds) - I didn't bother with these seeds and A.negundo doesn't really interest me (& I have a group planting already) so if anyone wants them, I am happy to give them away for postage cost.

I am aware that the seed from cultivars will not be true to the parent tree. However I am hoping they have some similar traits, or better still I could germinate a unique cultivar and name it myself :fc: The one called "Orange Fire" was named by the guy I got them from in the UK. He could not find any named cultivar similar to the parent tree the seeds came from. He told me the Autumn foliage is bright orange hence the name he gave it.

Nice :) can you please PM me where you ordered the Acer pseudosieboldianum from? I would love to get my hands on some of those seeds. I'm not addicted to propagating seed honest

Misho bonsai seeds are great. Patrick has sold on these days but the new guy seems to have a grip on things now.

Remember to check the Aqis database for what is allowed in and any conditions. Acer is a pretty easy one to get in under non-commercial.

Hi Luke,

I admire your enthusiasm. Great topic too. I am looking forward to the progressions.

Oh, and I hope you did not get into trouble for using the cups and glasses like that :)

Cheers.

Thanks, and no I didn't get in trouble as they are all the odd glasses/cups I have collected over the years. Obviously not a matching set, but still I was slightly concerned, but more so with the microwaving of the charcoal and sphagnum moss :palm:

I have just ordered more seed :palm: :palm: :palm: :palm:
You inspired me to google the Korean maple, and I found a site that has a heap of maple that I had never heard of but thought I would give a try as they were reasonable priced and allowed by customs :hooray: :hooray: :hooray:

http://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/garden- ... rees/acer/

I ordered -
2x BZ043: Tree Seed. Acer circinatum 15 seeds.
2x BZ164: Tree Seed. Acer ginnala Flame 20 seeds.
2x BZ089: Tree Seed. Acer pseudosieboldianum 20 seeds
3x BZ145: Tree Seed. Acer Japonicum 10 seeds.
1x BZ128: Tree Seed. Acer Cappadocicum 25 seeds.

Fingers crossed they dont take too long to arrive :fc: :fc:

Hi If those seeds are still available I would love to take your offer of the seeds.
Would love to see a pic of the group planting too if possible, might give me a few ideas.

     from one seed addict to another nice work ! I'll be following this thread with close interest as I stratified a bunch of maples, junipers, elm and cedars last week. Sorry for the vauge list but I am away from home at the moment holidaying on the south coast of NSW. The only difference between our methods was that I used propagation sand rather than charcoal.......kind of wished I had used charcoal now with it's anti fungal properties  anyways we shall see how it goes

Cheers Matt

Being they have a compound leaf they are quite frustrating to use for bonsai. I am constantly trying to reduce leaf size to allow light through too :palm: The group planting was given to me last year, yet it could do with a lot of improving as most of the trunks are similar thickness. I am waiting for re-potting season to see how I can improve them (might separate a few to allow stronger growth)
By all means you are welcome to the seeds, Just PM me with your name/address and I will get them to you.

hey Luke nice work :tu: .......I noticed you are a S.A. bonsai Society member. I went to my first S.A Bonsai Society last week and found it very interesting. Loving this thread too, i purchased some seed online a few weeks ago and after much research I'm planning on having a crack at propagating this weekend. :fc:

May be a stupid question but I was just wondering where you bought the charcoal from?

Might catch you at a few more meetings in the near future

I too will watch this space with great interest :tu:
