Hi guys havnt been around for a while my nans been sick she had a brain bleed after a knee reconstruction and everythings been down hill since then.
Soooo i recently went on a bonsai did with my uncle as my aunties uncle has 160 acers in healesville used to be a resort, i got some awsome maples and japanese maples all are seedlings i wish i had of taken my chainsaw also because there were some awsome trees that i coulda chopped down. but anyways my question is what the heck is this tree and what should i do? i have pruned it back and i thought about making the branch that goes right into deadwood and then going up with the left but was going to keep it small and make it as a shohin bonsai. what do you guys think?

Looks like a fig to me but you might need someone smarter to assist you.

I have one that looks really similar, I don't know exactly what species but I think it's a Port Jackson. Good luck with your bonsai and I'm sorry about your family troubles.

Hi Simon,
That tree is only a seedling. What to do with it? Leave it to grow a bit.
I can't make out enogh detail to give an accurate id but I'd be extremely surprised if you could get fig seedlings at Healsville. My first (wild) guess would be one of the Arbutus - strawberry tree?? but the leaves look a little too long and skinny. We would need much better pics of leaves and bark and terminal buds (and some idea of scale - is it in a 10, 15 or 30 cm pot???? no way to tell from your photo so very hard to even guess) to have a better guess.

A fig of some sort I think.
Wait till spring and then feed the buggery out of it and let go mad for a year or 2. Needs a lot more growing.

A second thought on this ones identity would be possibl pyracantha. There are likely to be a few adults around that area and they do self seed. Common name is firethorn and it will have sharp spines among the leaves but I'm not sure whether they have spikes when really young like this.

As Shibui said, it's not a fig guys. The bark and leaf arrangement is wrong.
Pot it up (or plant it out) and wait a few years. Then you will have real options.

I think Shibui is correct here with his guess. The bark definitely puts it in that category. The ones i have have a slight serration on the edges but very similar. They are wild in our area. A giveaway will be if and when it flowers. small clusters of pinky white bells.
