Bonsai for QLD?

Just wondering if anyone can help- I've been asked by some relatives for a bonsai. One lives in Ballina and requested a fig, but the other lives in Qld, (Glasshouse Mountains) and were really keen to have me do a Bonsai for them- but really didn't have a clue about what type of tree or species they'd like. They weren't keen on a fig so can anyone from SE Qld recommend some trees (other than figs) that do well up that way?
I've lived in Sydney (& still do) all my life so really have no idea what would be suitable for the climate. They're average gardeners so perhaps something that is reasonably hardy as well?
Many thanks-
Chipper5

Check out Reddragon's link in the forum on Atlas of Australia. You can type in the postcode and species suitable for the area will come up.
Good one Reddragon!

Thanks! Sounds like the go as I'll be able to train it in Syd too!

Good one Reddragon!

This is excellent too! However limited to natives so I'd have to see if I could get the tree species in Sydney... but I'll send them the link and see if there's anything they're really keen on.
Thanks guys!

Hi Chipper
I live in Brisbane, the trees that are doing well in my collection are Junipers, figs Queensland small leaf, Chinese elms, bougs and Banksias, I have several black pines as well
The key thing is to put them in a position that does not get too much afternoon sun especially in Summer
Cheers

Thanks Amy,
Some more excellent suggestions

- I'll put forward all these as suggestions for them and let them decide what they'd like- I really want to do something they will be happy with but also something that would survive well up there so I really appreciate the advice and variety!
Cheers, Chipper5

Swamp cypress would do very well in the Glasshouse Mountians, It is fairly humid and wet most of the time in that area.
