Peter Kreb has a great write up on blue pots and it has me thinking I would love a blue pot for my firethorn.
Here are some samples of the sort of pot I want. If anyone has something like this to sell, can make them or has any leads please let me know.
Thanks

Hi Bretts,
I am pretty sure those pots are based on or are antique chinese containers. Tokoname potteries still make similar to those patterns although they can be pricey (less than antiques though).

The chrysanthemum pot can be found at that link. You dont often see that blue colour in modern Japnese pots but occasionally they appear. Hatori uses a similar blue colour on some of their pots.

Pot 58A36 might be something along the lines of what you want..... although it is $300 ish dollars and shipping usually runs at $50+ along with packing costs.

That's a great start Jow, thanks.
58A36 is not bad. Maybe a little thin and perfect for what I am thinking but I am sure it would be a stunner under the firethorn.
08A53 in your first link is closer to what I was thinking but it is green, although a very nice green.
If the first is about $300 then I guess this one would be about $400. That would eat my pot budget fior this year up pretty quick
If you read all three pages in Peters Write up I do believe he states these pots are antique Chinese, he also goes into a little about the thought process in their manufacture.
Please keep the info comming it looks like I have alot to learn before I can find myself something I am happy with and can afford.
Maybe I will have to make my own

Yep they look antique chinese although a lot of antique japanese containers were inspired by antique chinese containers so it can be a little tricky to tell sometimes..... Nice pots either way.
I have a feeling i saw a chrysanthemum pot for sale at one of the Melbourne shows. If memory serves me right it was from a local importer who has connections to a chinese factory. They were a good bit cheaper than Japanese pots. My memory of them is hazy at best so i could be wrong.
I'll ask around.

Hi Brett, I'm Val and I make bonsai pots. I'm in Melbourne. I don't fancy trying to post a pot interstate, but if you are somewhere in Melb or country Vic, I could try to make you one. What size do you want? Length, width, depth please. Definitely rectangular? Stoneware only, or consider earthenware? I can do that darker blue of the first pot you had a picture of, in earthenware. I can do the cobalt colour of the second pot in stoneware, (I think.)
Cheers,
Val Garth

Hey Brett,
Penny (MudlarkPottery) has a really nice blue glaze & I am sure if you ask her she would be happy to make a pot to your specs. I don't know if she would be able to recreate the first but the second is well within reach. Its the same blue glaze that I used on the little rectangle Pup posted recently with a tiny raft in it (sitting on top of a soft drink can).

Hi Guy's
Sorry I didn't reply earlier, The computer fizzled a diode and my access was very limited.
Jow has found a vendor that stocks what he calls crisanthymum pots. I am still in the process of contacting him and I will also have a go at making a couple myself in a day or two. I think we have a nice blue like this in amoungst the glazes.
Thanks for all the help I will keep you posted on how I go.

Thanks VS, long way to go yet though
I wish you had of took a few more progression shots,
Don't you know Potters techniques are secret
I did think of taking a pic when I had all the pieces layed out but that is pretty straight forward. Cut the base the shape you want and then cut a piece the same length as each section. Joining the pieces and getting it all straight is the hard part.
I guess I could do a tutorial on making slab pots. We do have one on oval pots here but how many people would want a slab building one at it is pretty straight forward and I don't know anyone that has access to a kiln that would not know already or have some one to show them as I was shown.
Not extra dry but Good Head

A nice beer but wasn't bought quick enough by the punters so the local has them on special for $30 a carton. Always on the lookout for a bargain
If ya mean the second blue pot 55 I would agree except I like the first pot better and I cant do intricate feet yet

Your pot looks fantastic. Remeber to dry slowly to help prevent cracking - often worth draping a plastic sheet over it to slow the drying. (Pardon me if you know these things.) I don't know much about how to do the chrysanthemum decoration yet either - sprig style I presume, but I haven't really practiced doing sprig decoration, just heard of it.
Good luck, Val
